Gunsmithing .22lr to .22mag

Re: .22lr to .22mag

Convert what?
IIRC, .22WMR uses .224 barrels. A .222 RF barrel wouldn't likely blow up, but pressure might be high.
If a repeater, you have the whole magazine problem.
Still, lots of Martinis hace been rechambered to WMR.
My kids have killed a lot of turkeys with one.
If a Ruger 77/22 you just need a barrel, mag, and bottom metal.

Re: .22lr to .22mag

If you have a 22LR barrel/action it will make an EXCELLENT candidate for the 22WRFM. (assuming of course you have enough bolt travel to yank out the case.

The 22LR uses a "tight" 22 barrel. The 22WRFM uses the same dimensions as a 22 centerfire. This is the trick to making the things shoot halfway decent. You use the rimfire barrel with a reamer set up for the smaller bore/pilot size.

Then just do your thing. It's no different than a tight groove 30 cal barrel used by many palma shooters for years. It'll choke the bullet a bit and the gun's get smaller on paper.

Your biggest issue is the bolt face. a 22lr has an OD on the rim of roughly .290". The bigger winmag is at .3--- something if memory serves me correctly.

Be prepared to fiddle with bolt faces, extractors, and shell holders.

Doing it this way (assuming the rest of the gun is done right) will make the 22 win mag about as accurate as you can. The best ammunition comes from RWS in Germany but be prepared to thaw out your credit card. It's tough to get and SPENDY.

Good luck and hope this helps.

Re: .22lr to .22mag

The rifle is a working Savage MKIIF. It is my understanding that the bolt is the same as the .22WM version as far as throw, with the smaller bolt face/rim releif, whitch could be opened up with little effort and the extractor should be easy enough. bottom metal can be purchased relitively cheaply or could be fabricated for more fun.

Sure I could buy the .22WM version that everyone has but what fun would that be. Kinda want to do it just to do it. It might be "fun". Maybe I'm just stupid.

Re: .22lr to .22mag

SAAMI Spec's

22 Short, Long Long Rifle = .217 Bore x .222 Groove

22 WMR = .219 x .224

I will most likely foul heavily and accuracy may be poor due to bullet distortion.

I wouldn't recommend it.

Re: .22lr to .22mag

Brian,

I can tell you after chambering several of these none of the above takes place. I did quite a few while working for Anschutz on a variety of rimfire guns.

David Kiff made me the tooling. We had a very long discussion over the phone about it prior to ever putting tools to barrels. I trust David completely and he's yet to steer me wrong in 12+ years.

For a short period a number of Dakota Arms products were done exactly like this on Lilja barrels. (when I first worked there in 2003/early 04 there was a big run on rimfire stuff in anticipation of us coming out with the "midgit" Dakota 76 action set up for Lr's and the little winmag.)

All shot better and fouling wasn't any worse than any other "rim whacker."

Hope this helps.
