.22LR upper assembly

Hey gun nuts! I just bought all the pieces required to assemble a 5.56 AR-15, but I am thinking about a .22LR upper because I have a scope and a reflex site, and because .22 ammo is much cheaper to shoot for practice purposes. Does anyone have any relevant information for brands or general set-ups? Any thoughts are welcome.

Thanks guys

Only way to roll in my opinion! I love mine!

Without a doubt the best 22 top end out there.

awesome guys. thanks a bunch. hopefully i can actually find a Nordic Components upper. Seems like a quick internet search produces nothing but out-of-stock backorders. any suggestions for that??

Re: .22LR upper assembly

Another vote for the Nordic Components .22 mine rocks and I have tried them all in the past and mine has worked flawlessly.

You wont regret it!

Re: .22LR upper assembly

Yup, The Tac Sol is ok.

It has a few issues like no bolt hold open so after running this
in drills I find myself grabing for the charging handle on the 5.56 upper.

After about 100 rounds it gets dirty enough for more stoppages.
Brand type and 22lr in itself is so dirty thats it's all relative.

Running it fast seems to cause less stoppages than slow firing.

Aftermarket charging handles like a Gunfighter dont' fit in the upper.

I haven't tested for accuracy.

Oh yea, it will give out of battery firings when it gets to dirty.
Not good when giving to first time shooters.

+1

I e-mailed them and they said they were hoping to see them back in stock in the next month or two.

Re: .22LR upper assembly

Talk to Frank White @ Compass Lake Engineering. He will build a dedicated .22 upper ANY way you want it. He has built me a 10.5" barreled upper to match my 9mm SMG upper and a Service rifle upper. Both are reliable and match accurate.
Not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

Re: .22LR upper assembly

I would take my $400 towards an upper and buy reloading gear if you don't have it already. You're kind of implying that since you say .22 ammo is cheaper. If I bought .308 and .22 the only difference would be I'd get 50 rounds of one and 20 rounds of the other. That's for Eley so maybe not a fair example but perfect for my own situation. Or take your $ and trick out a 10/22 or much less and put a target hammer in a 597.

Unless you're duplicating a SR upper like what CLE will build you, it's not a very good bang for your buck IMO. I really don't see that you're getting much training out of it unless you have an M4 for your job and then you run a similar upper on your own dime.

I think most people end up with $400 worth of plinker sitting on their lower.
