i want to start reloading 45 acp again both jhp and fmj to run both in my usp and usc/ump clone, i was thinking of sticking with nothing but 230gr bullets and seat them at one length and be done with it.

i remember my usc would get a jam every now and then and i think its do to the bullets not beaing seated out enough, thus if i stick to one grain and can get every thing to cycle 100% in my usc it should work in my usp.

any thoughs ? can a 185 be seated about as long as a 230 ? which is better in a jhp 185 or 230

Re: 230 gr jhp or 185 jhp

Hornady XTP-PH 185gr COAL: 1.230"
Hornady XTP-PH 230gr COAL: 1.230"
Hornady FMJ-RN 230gr COAL: 1.230"

This is as per Hornady. You may have to adjust your seat die to go from one type of bullet to the next. That is because the FMJ is rounded and the XTP-HP is more of a cone shape. The die will not hit the bullet in the same place, so there will be a differance in COAL. Since you are using the same bullet type the COAL "Should" stay the same.

Hope this helps,
Hugo

And, depending on your pistol and magazines, you may have to adjust the OAL when switching from FMJ to HP...the contour of the noses differ, of course, and the HP may be a bit more finicky. The best advice I received on that was to pick a HP that the nose contour best resembles the FMJ. The Remington 230 grain HP Golden Sabre feeds well in my pistols.
