What kind of performance could I expect from a 24", 1:8 twist 300 Blackout Rem 700 bolt rifle? I have a Rem 700 .17 Fireball action and was hoping to throw a 300 BLK barrel on it for mid-range hog shooting with the supersonic ammo. Is this platform strictly for suppressed short barreled set-ups or would it be effective inside 300 yds. with the 24" barrel? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

TheCivilian,

Supersonic 300 AAC BLACKOUT loads typically utilize 44 Magnum type pistol powder. With the very high burn rate of this powder, the 300 AAC BLACKOUT does not gain much when you exceed 16 inches of barrel. I am sure RSILVERS will chime in with some hard data. He is the Project Director for the 300 AAC BLACKOUT and has analytical data galore. In my opinion, the 300 AAC BLACKOUT shines the most in 8-12.5" barrels. 16" barrels gain some velocity over 12.5" barrels and have a lot of good uses. Brad Selph has some great videos posted on the 300 AAC BLACKOUT subforum over at Silencertalk.com. In one video he smacks a hog with a 16" 300 AAC BLACKOUT at around 178 yards or so. I would like to see if any posts that they have successfully shot boar with this cartridge past 200 yards.

I see you want to use the same bolt as your .221 Fireball so the 6.8 SPC is out of the question. It should give more a fair bit more range at 24" of barrel but it is not "just swapping barrels" due to the larger cartridge rim diameter.

I hope this helps.

I've been shooting my 10" BLK with supersonics exclusively. 110 V-max's at 2200 fps. The BDC reticle in my scope allows me to get out to 350 yards. It has the accuracy and the balls to drop a pig at that range, but the wind drift is significant. Punch in the numbers in a ballistic program and check into that.

Marginally better performance than a 16" barrel.

Re: 24" BBL 300 Blackout Bolt Rifle??

According to QuickLoad....

A 125 grain load which does 2240 fps in a 16 inch barrel will do 2400 fps in a 24 inch barrel. At 55 yards, that load will be back to the muzzle velocity of a 16 inch barrel.

So the answer is - a 24 inch barrel will get you an extra 55 yards range over a 16 inch barrel. While I think 16 inch is the best barrel length for typical use, I think an extra 55 yards is significant.

So 8" of barrel nets 160fps according to QL....giving us an average increase in MV of 20fps per inch.

Marginal has just been redefined.

I'm sorry Robert. This round shouldn't be chambered in anything other than 16" or under barrels. Which is not a bad thing. If only 5.56mm was like this...if only

I would hunt with a 9 inch barrel, but why don't you consider 55 yards of extra range significant to someone looking for extra range?
