I tried the search and didn't find much. Sorry not the best when it comes to that stuff. Is anyone running a .243 with heavy bullets out of a 22in or 24in barrel? this will be mostly lang range target shooting and coyote rifle. The wife might also use it for deer, but close range. So if anyone is running those barrel lenghtts, what bullet and what velocity are you getting. thanks,

I've got an early Phoenix Machine action with Bartlien #5 contour barrel, 1:8 twist finished at 22". Lapua brass, H4350, CCI BR-2 primers and Berger 105 VLD's seated back off the lands quite a bit. Accuracy easily .5 MOA, closer to .3 I'd say. Getting over 3000 fps at 3800' and 80 degrees. Hope that helps.

I use a 24" on my Remington 700 but I imagine gebhardt has the right idea about the 22" as well. I think you could get away with both barrel lengths for what you want it for.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will go with the 22in barrel. And see what happens. Geb most of my shooting/hunting happen between 4400' and 2000' so hopefully i can get close to your numbers both accuracy ( I know mostly depends on my shooting) and velocity.

I was heistant also about the barrel length but decided to do it anyway and am glad I did. That rifle is actually my wifes that she uses for comps and hunting, so keeping things light and portable was a major consideration. I think you'll be just fine with a 22" out of a quality barrel. I know our velocity is pretty damn close as we've gotten hits on steel out to 800 based off of Exbal numbers. At 500 it is is spot on. Good luck.

Edited to add that if you'll be using it for hunting, I'd highly recommend the Berger 105 hunting VLD's. My wife shot a Mule deer doe at a lasered 500 yds this season, one shot, double lung. Basically a bang flop. Good bullets and excellent accuracy.
