Any one running the 20" .243 lmt mws barrel? If so what are your experiences? Does it cycle reliably?

How bout some .243 in a large frame info as well. The barrel I am looking at is 1/9 twist. What weight bullets will that let me shoot and at what velocity out of a 20" barrel?

Any mag length problems with the .308 ar mags when used with .243?

Any info is appreciated.

For that price, I would have the barrel fabricated and turned by Brux $480. It would gnats ass accurate, and you can get it in a legnth that does not chop the balls off the .243 winchester.

If you dont wanna wait, Lilja has drop in 8.5T drop in .243 barrels for about same price as Brux....

Re: .243 lmt mws barrel info

I run a LMT 243 it shoots 87g vmaxs great and have not had a single problem with it. It did not like the 107-115g stuff my 243 bolt gun likes but with the LMT 1-9 twist I did not think they would. If I could do it over I would go 6mm creedmore like the gap-10 guys.

Re: .243 lmt mws barrel info

Thanks guys for the replies. I would like to go 6cm, but its a lot of hassle to run in my mws.

I finally noticed the .243 barrels in stock so I figured now was the time to order, I am just not convinced the 1/9 twist is what I want.

Re: .243 lmt mws barrel info

My MWS is a 260 so i can't really help you. I do know that i had a Remington 700 with a 1-9 that wouldn't shoot 107s or 115s but was shooting 105 Amaxs really well. Might be something to try..

Re: .243 lmt mws barrel info

M1AJunkie,

You should really take my advise (not trying to be an ass).

Lilja has 1:8 twist barrels in stock. These barrels will stabilize up to the 115gr DTAC bullets. They can also be had in lengths from 20"-24".

Alternately, Brux will build you drop-in AR barrels in any contour, length, and finish you want for $480.

You do realize that standard AR10/LR308 barrels will not fit in a MWS without a lot of modification right? Unless brux is building MWS barrels and i haven't heard..

Re: .243 lmt mws barrel info

Dirtracer,

I just looked a little closer at the link. There appears to be a additional shank just in front of the barrel extension...i dont have an MWS, so I dont know whether this piece is integral with the barrel or if it's a keyed fit or shrunk-fit.

If that portion of the barrel can be bought separately, then it can be fit onto any appropriate AR barrel by any smith.

Otherwise, you are right, you are stuck with whatver LMT makes.

Re: .243 lmt mws barrel info

The LMT has a different barrel extension than either an Armalite or DPMS pattern rifle. I know of at least one place doing conversions, but it adds $200 to the price of the barrel.

Re: .243 lmt mws barrel info

Tx_flyboy I have looked into custom barrels converted to work in the mws, but I'm not sure its worth it to me. I would really prefer a 6mm cm from gap converted to use but the cost is at least double the price of the barrels offered from lmt.

However, lmt doesn't offer barrels over 20" and they don't have twist rates I would prefer available. That's why I am thinking I'm just going to have to go with what lmt offers for the time being.

I have been going back and forth for several months on the .243 vs .260 and I'm still not sure exactly which of those would be best for me.

Re: .243 lmt mws barrel info

M1AJunkie,

Very well.

Given the choice, i'd pick the 243 over the 260.

Ballistics, cost to shoot, recoil, availability of factory ammo or reloading components all break the way of the .243.

The only thing (significant) the 260 has over the 243 is barrel life.

Re: .243 lmt mws barrel info

This is asked as a question more than anything, are you sure that's true?

I would think ballistics wise the .260 would have an advantage over the 243, especially when you are limited with twist rates. A 120ish grain 260 bullet vs an 86ish grain 243 one is pretty different I would think. Don't own a .243, so if no one can offer a better answer I can set up a theoretical one for comparison to a .260 in my ballistic app.

Re: .243 lmt mws barrel info

After some more research on the internet, I like the idea of running the lija 24" .260 barrel available from their online store.

However they state the barrels have a dpms barrel extension, will that extension be an issue when I send the barrel to dbmg to be converted for use in the mws?

I have emailed lija and they say the lmt bolt should work fine, I just didn't realize the dpms barrel extension until this morning.
