How much extra work and $$$ is required to have a smith put a .243 or similar caliber barrel on a Rem 700 Long Action, vs Just another long action like a .270?

I thought I needed to stay with a long cartridge for my 721 30-06 rebarrel project, but someone suggested I go short. I would much prefer a .243 or 6mm over a .270, but not sure I can afford to pay much extra over standard cost.

For those not familiar with my plight, I am a very low budgeted shooting and hunting enthusiast wanting to put a a cheep take-off barrel on a rem 721 30-06.

Thanks

Joel

Re: .243 on a Rem 700 Long Action?

Just be aware, pretty much every "cheap take-off" barrel is going to be a 9-twist or slower twist which will not stabilize the longer match bullets (107's, 115's, etc).

Re: .243 on a Rem 700 Long Action?

Actually, this works quite well. I run a 243 in a LA with the right bolt face using a $70 Adams&Bennets on it from Midway. It was one of those prethreaded and short chambered deals and a quality smith from this site finished it up for me for not very much money.

Don't know how the head spacing might work out on a take off, probably depends if you are lucky or not.

I built my wife a 243 on a Model 70 long action, it shoots dern good. Also built my Grandson a 308 on a 700 LA, it too is a great shooter.

Only had to add a block to the mag. well to make sure I didnt have any feeding problems.

Re: .243 on a Rem 700 Long Action?

Just to add to the already stated fact of this not being an issue: despite shooting .308/7.62 (which will obviously fit a short action just like the .243), issue M24s are long action. As long as you give a little bit of extra attention as to how the ammo is loading/sitting in the box mag, she'll run fine.
