243 twist and barrel length for 1000yds?

Re: 243 twist and barrel length for 1000yds?

7.5 or 8 twist
25 inches or longer
115 berger, 115 DTAC, 105 scenar, 105 berger, 108 berger.
They all work, the best bang for your buck are the new pointed Dtac's.

7.5 twist is what I use with my .243. It will shoot all the 105+ grn bullets well.

+1

Need the twist to stabilize the 115s and the length to maximize velocity.

Re: 243 twist and barrel length for 1000yds?

I've never had any twist slower than 8 stabilize anything bigger than 105s. At best, I've heard of marginal success of Savage 9tw barrels 105 AMAXs. YMMV.

USMARINE1108,

I picked up a Savage pre-fit barrel from McGowen's excess inventory page back in December. It is chambered in .243 Winchester with a 1-7.0" twist, runs 26" long with 8-flutes, and measures 1" in diameter at the muzzle. It came threaded, with a 2"-long honeycomb type muzzle break and a thread protector.

I paid $400.00

It was one helluva deal, and shoots like gangbusters.

I'm running 115 DTAC's at 3,011fps and shooting inside my .300WSM with 210SMK's for windage and elevation to infinity.

My buddy just took order of a 1-7.0" twist 28" 22-250 barrel from McGowen with similar specs, and its just as nice.

Here's a link to McGowen's Savage Pre-Fit page: http://www.mcgowenbarrel.com/savage.htm .

They're certainly worth considering...
