Hey guys,

I am thinking of ordering a new barrel for my 243 Win.

I plan on shooting 100 grain Hornady Interlock SPBT bullets, 87 grain Berger hunting VLD's, and 85 grain Barnes TSX bullets.

What twist would you recommend?

MAINLY I will probably be shooting the 100 grain bullets.

Re: 243 Win twist rate for 100 grain bullet

If you're NEVER going to shoot anything heavier than 100gr hunting bullet then 9-twist.

If you might do 105's, 107's, 108's and occasionally 115's then 8-twist.

If you're going to shoot 115's exclusively 7.8-7.5-twist.

Re: 243 Win twist rate for 100 grain bullet

If those are the only bullet choices, a 1/10 twist will suffice.

I am shooting 115DTAC's out of a 3 groove 1/8, and it is a hammer. My other 243 has a 1/10 and shoots all the ones you mentioned just fine. Once it wears out though, I'll probably put a 1/8 on it too.

1/8 just to brought safe

Re: 243 Win twist rate for 100 grain bullet

My 1:10 will not stabilise 100 grain bullets - 90 grain max. Go with a 1:9 or faster to be on the safe side.

Re: 243 Win twist rate for 100 grain bullet

Well now it has a 1:10 turn, shoots 85s .75MOA, but 100s 2MOA is what I'm seeing.

I never plan on shooting anything lighter than an 85 grain bullet through this and it is EXCLUSIVELY a hunting gun, not a varmint or target gun.

Will a 1:8 turn give me the 85-100 grain capablity I'm after?

Re: 243 Win twist rate for 100 grain bullet

There is no reason a 1:10 won't stabilize a 100 grain bullet. If you want to be safe, a 1:9 will do just fine.

Unless you plan to push a 108-115, there is no need to go 1:8.

I've shot 4-5 different bullets in the 100+ category with a 1:10 factory .243 and a 1:9 twist factory 6mm Rem.

Re: 243 Win twist rate for 100 grain bullet

My savage model 11GCNS shoots 105gr Amax's into a .3" at 100yds with a 1-9.25 twist.

I dont think you can go wrong with a 1/8 barrel and midway has good prices on shilen barrels.
I just bought one for one of my project builds.

It 'should' stabilize a 100 grain bullet but its right at the bottom of the scale for stability. That can't be conducive for accuracy even if the bullet is just stable.

Better to go with a faster twist rather than a slower one in this case I'd suggest. By going with a 1:9 or even a 1:8 you know there won't be any issues, there's really no downside other than maybe a slight drop in MV with the 1:8 twist? I can't imagine tough hunting bullets are likely to break apart mid air with over spinning either.

Re: 243 Win twist rate for 100 grain bullet

+1 on the 1/9 twist; I have a 243 AI that shoot lights out with 95 and 105 VLD's. If you plan on shooting much over 100 I would switch to 1/8. I also have a 6mm 284 that shoots the 105 VLD's awesome.

Forgot to add it might be a great time to check out the group buy for rock creek barrels. Great price $245 and they are getting some great accuracy.....
