243win vs. 260 rem vs. 7mm-08 vs other

Re: 243win vs. 260 rem vs. 7mm-08 vs other

The 260 has the most factory brass to neck up or down or just buy it already formed for 260. The 6.5CM is proprietary brass and the 6.5x47 is only one kind of brass with small rifle primers which may or may not have piercing problems.

The 6.5 bullets with have better BCs with mild loads, and with the 115 DTAC which is one of the top 6mm bullets you have to push them fast to resemble the BC of the 6.5 bullets. That in turn wears your barrel out faster. But in this game barrels are expendable. If i were to do it over again i would build a 260 again in a heartbeat and not think twice.

vkc, to go outside the box here, I say trash the bolt gun idea. Get a DPMS Lr-308, trash the barrel or save it, get a Kreiger light contour, chamber it in 6XC, brake it, and roll out with that. Check it out, brother. You will love it.

Bolt guns are for World War I re-enactments and those still watching black and white televisions.

Calm down, guys; just kidding. ;))

What wrong with black and white TV?

On a good day, if I hold the rabbit ears just right, I can watch Mayberry RFD......

Re: 243win vs. 260 rem vs. 7mm-08 vs other

260 over the 243 simply based on barrel life alone. I love the 260, I have a couple of them. Ballisticly at distance they are all pretty close, so why would you get the barrel burner for no real advantage? My vote 260 all day long.

Re: 243win vs. 260 rem vs. 7mm-08 vs other

It is really a shame that more companies have not caught on with the idea of loading match grade ammunition for these cartridges. Hornady has lead the way with the Creedmoor. Blackhills is planning another run of .260 match. I am really considering a .260 build myself. The only thing that stops me is that I can buy 6.5 Creedmoor factory match ammunition at competitive prices.

Reference the 6X47 one of the top shooters (and benchrest gunsmith) shoots this cartridge for 600 yards F-class. He and another guy (using a 6BR)usually have X count battles. Interesting cartridge.

Good luck

I own all 3 calibers and if I'm hunting I use the 7mm08, If I'm playing its the 243, the 260 is a safe queen. But the 243 is a barrel burner if you are trying to bet the 260 LR performance using the 105's or 115. If you plann on shooting alot go with the 260.

Re: 243win vs. 260 rem vs. 7mm-08 vs other

Thanks for all the great advice.

I was leaning towards 243win because of all the ample factory hunting and shooting ammo, but then I looked at the BC of the bullets used and they are not too good. Also started thinking of limited barrel life, especially with trying to load and push bullets to their max potential. Especially since I've shot more than 2000 rounds from my 308win just this summer. Also thought about relatively smaller hit signature vs. 6.5mm bullets making them harder to spot.

So now I thinking 6.5 Creedmoor or 260 rem. Good thing about CM is that the factory loads are awesome, but bad thing is only one company that I'm aware of makes them. Question about brass for Creedmoor, only Hornady makes it? I've seen the thread that discuss making CM brass from other calibers, but sounds pretty complicated...is that the case?

Now that leaves 260rem looking pretty good with more brass available, either factory, or necking up from 243 or down from 308win. Also has more case capacity then 6.5CM, don't know if the difference is significant.

I'm going to over to a friends house this weekend to look at his reloading set-up to make a decision.

Re: 243win vs. 260 rem vs. 7mm-08 vs other

The 260 Rem is significantly easier to reload for. There is plenty of good factory brass that all it takes is a necking up or down and load. You are correct that only Hornady makes CM brass.

Re: 243win vs. 260 rem vs. 7mm-08 vs other

7-08 is one pass through the FL die with your 308 brass of choice. Set a .590 BC 162 Amax on top and voila, 260ish windage with a 2700fps barrel friendly load....what's not to like?

Re: 243win vs. 260 rem vs. 7mm-08 vs other

Another vote for the .260. 140's with H4350 and she'll run. I've owned two now and have had nothing but great experiences with them. Super accurate, low recoil, good barrel life, great BC (I run the 140 A-max with a BC of .585) and deadly on game. Get a full length sizing die and a Reading Comp seating die and have fun.

Good luck and post what you decided on.

Re: 243win vs. 260 rem vs. 7mm-08 vs other

Count me in the .243 crowd. I am shooting 105 Bergers at just a hair over 2800fps. Easy on the barrel...but chosen because the rifle is a tack driver at that load. Lapua brass and good bullet choices. That said I would be happy with a 6x47 or .260 also. Some of my choice was about caliber consolidation....daughter shoots a .243 so I already had good tools for that caliber. A really nice one built on the Surgeon 591 showed up here on the hide and that made my choice even easier.

I have about 5-6 reloads on my Lapua brass. I am burning H1000 and it is pretty low pressure, but still pushing the 115 around 3100 fps.
