What do you think? What are you running and how is it going and why?

I know this is a broken record just wanting some current info...

Thanks

I had a 24" Bartlein barrel 260 running 139s. It went anywhere from 2750 to just over 2900. Pick what you want, but I would go 24-26" so you can get the velocity you need without running it too hot.

Re: 260 - 22", 24", or 26" opinions

I should say that my 6.5 Creedmoor I went with a 26", on my 308 I have a 19". Both serve their purpose so you have to decide what the trade offs are and what is important to you.

Re: 260 - 22", 24", or 26" opinions

Dang a few of each...That helps me alot, lol j/k.

The barrel I have is a Rem Varmint Taper at 27". It's a tough one. I think 22" would be way nice, but...

Re: 260 - 22", 24", or 26" opinions

My AW came with a 24",and I prefer a 24", a nice happy medium with a little higher velocity, but not too long to where it feels awkwardly long. That way you get a little more versatility for minimal sacrifice in each area.

Re: 260 - 22", 24", or 26" opinions

I have a Rem 700 in 308 with a 21" 5r plus a Surefire brake, I bought a 27" Obermeyer Rem Varmint 6.5mm blank to make it into a .260. I am about 98% convinced I will have it cut to 22" plus a GAP Titan brake when I get it switched. My plan is to shoot mostly 123gr and some 139-142gr.

What is end use for rifle?

You'll lose roughly 20 fps/inch or 80 fps with 22" barrel vs. 26" barrel.

I prefer 26" barrel but can see appeal of a 22" barrel if you are using it for hunting in brush/thick timber or tactical comps w/suppressor.

I'm in the high desert and 90+% of the time I can use the extra velocity to buck wind better over a shorter, more maneuverable rifle.

F-open rifle.....get a 30" tube.

My Bartlein in 22" (Med Palma.) I use my rifle for hunting so it has to be practical. I went through the same dilemma before sending my action to GAP. I havent regretted it once. It balances perfectly.

Re: 260 - 22", 24", or 26" opinions

Need to figure out what you'll be using the rifle for and what kind of velocity you want to get with the rifle. Answer those two questions and you will know what length you need.

Re: 260 - 22", 24", or 26" opinions

Granted, velocity is good, but it is not the end all be all of bullet performance. That's the beauty of 6.5 pills- there performance characteristics don't require lots of speed to reach out and fetch 'em.
All that said I've got a Creed that started out at 28" med palma that got wacked to 22". Best thing I ever did...

Seriously, check out this thread: http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2653056#Post2653056

It seems pretty impressive and he was getting an average extra of 43fps after the treatment. If you look at the before/after he saw as much as around 70 fps I think. I mean for an extra $80 dollars who could argue with that. That is why I say go 22" and Melonite it to bring velocity back up.

Re: 260 - 22", 24", or 26" opinions

That melonite looks awesome. I could have probably answered this question by reading it all, but fixing to have to leave. Do you have the barrel chambered and done and get get it done, or can it be done to a blank?

This rifle will be used for maybe some hunting, target, tactical comp someday (if I ever grow a pair, and try).

I'm thinking between 22-24 would be great, but 22" if the melonite really will do what it says.

Anyone have pics of their 22" and 24" ers?

That's some good advice. Almost exactly what I told a guy about the 6.5 Creedmoor recently.

Re: 260 - 22", 24", or 26" opinions

I wanted to get a 26" Bartlein in 260 for my AW but due to a mix up I wound up receiving last week a 24" instead. Haven't started any load development yet but resized some 243 rem brass and ran some 140 amax's at 41.5g H4350 just for plinkin until my lapua 260 brass arrives.

Was able to get out today and shot only one group on paper at 420 yards with the amax's. It was kind of windy but I figure the 24" barrel will probably work for now. Some day I'll get a big boy barrel.

Re: 260 - 22", 24", or 26" opinions

i started with 28 to get all the velocity i could get
at 1700 rnds rechambered and cut barrel to 24
now im at 2600 rnds ive lost about 100fps but it still shoots
just as accurately as before

ive never missed the velocity but good god pointing it is so much nicer now
