.260 Brass trimming?

I do the same as 427. How much is it flowing on average? What is your trim to length and what is the average length after firing?

Thankfully I have a Giraud as well and it actually makes trimming brass fun (my son gets a kick out of it).

I trim the brass to 2.030 and it flows to about 2.043ish... seems like a lot to me.

I trim the brass to 2.830 and it flows to about 2.843ish... seems like a lot to me. </div></div>

Not that it matters too much, but I hardly think those are your trim to lengths and flow lengths. Maybe COALs. Are your necks keeping their thickness?

Re: .260 Brass trimming?

I "Fire Form" my new Remington brass, neck size it, and then trim it to 2.025, run it back through the neck sizing die one last time, and then load it.

I can then easily fire that brass 4-5 times in my bolt rifle without doing anything to it other than neck sizing it.

After 4-5 firings I will check it with a precision mic and caliper, and if need be full length size and trim.

I have shot and reloaded the majority of the brass 8-10 times and only needed to neck size it.

If you are getting that much flow and change in length with each firing, then I would guess the pressure is on the very high side, and/or the brass is on the really soft side.

Sorry, but I don't have any experience with necking brass up or down for a .260, so I am not sure how that could come into play?

Best of Luck,
M Richardson

PS: I have very good luck with the Remington Brass, takes a little work to prep it, but it has worked great for me so far.

Oops, I put an extra 8 in there.. I meant I trim to 2.030 and it flows to 2.042-3. I also measured my neck thickness and after four reloads the neck wall is 0.016" (the new brass measures 0.018")

I think Mr. Richardson is right, my powder charges are on the high side and the brass is soft. So that is most likely the main cause of the lengthening.

Thanks everyone for the input.

Re: .260 Brass trimming?

427,

It came at that dimension because that is how far I set it up to adjust the chamfer. I make no claim to set the overall length any more than just "in the ball park." There are too many variables to be able to hit the exact number you want with your brass when I first set the machine up. Everybody has a different number they want to see, some want minimum, some maximum, some in the middle, and they all vary by where you set your headspace dimension. Way too much effort to read everybody's mind, so I get it close and send the last case that was trimmed on that machine with it. The user can adjust from there. Its all covered in the instructions.

Thanks,
