Ok i have asked a few questions on here but now i have a build question. I have a mauser FN action that is pretty rough but it is still good. So would it be a good action for a 260. I dont have much experince at any of this but my dad is a machineist that has been working on CNC and manual machines for about 20 years. So i have a good amount of help with him. Just wondering if anyone has any good ideas.

Re: 260 build

I have a 260 built on a CZ comercial action (same action as the Rem 798 now). Great little rifle. I used a A&B barrel from midway that was threaded/short chambered stainless fluted. I think it was like $130 bucks for the barrel. A nice rifle built when I was poor and couldnt afford the level of sticks I have these days.

any GOOD ideas?.....

sure

consider an action that has a lock time a tad brisker than some 150 year old design.......for starters.

Re: 260 build

OK well its the only action i have at the time and dont intend on spending a fortune on my first build. If not a 260 then what caliber. I am open to any design. I am not willing to use up my 700 actions yet that would have to be for a pro and I am far from it. I just thought it would be good start to learn on. But thanks for the replies.

I built a 260 on a VZ24 Mauser action in 2009 and it feeds well.

I build 4 or 5 rifles per year for myself, and I consider the 260 to be in the success column.

What does it all mean?
Mausers are plenty strong.

The book to read is Bolt Action Rifles by Frank De Haas
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0873496604/ref=dp_ob_olp_book_display_on_website

In that book, he describes dissembly, design features, and some wise comments on ~100 bolt action designs:

1) The cost savings of the Rem 700 with push feed, round bottom, small extractor, soldered on bolt handle, washer for a recoil lug, safety on the trigger, and gas in your eye simple bolt.
2) The expensive to manufacture Mauser with controlled feed, flat bottom, claw extractor, forged bolt handle, integral recoil lug, safety on the firing pin, and gas by passing with firing pin and bolt body.

De Haas breaks down the other 98 bolt action designs that are all somewhere in between on the difficulty to manufacture spectrum. i.e. the Sav 110 is closer to the Rem700, the pre '64 Win 70 is closer to the Mauser, and the Howa is somewhere in the middle.

Re: 260 build

Actually they work quite well. Bolt is right, the firing time is faster on the new actions but the Mauser still make a good lower cost platform.

I have them ranging from a 243 to a 7RM and they they all easily shoot sub MOA. Not as many options available for scope mounts, BM, etc but they work well for what they are.
