I know this topic has been somewhat covered before but I am looking for more specific information on how to neck down the 7-08. I am guessing that you would just run it through a 260 FL die with an expander ball then fire form from there? If not what dies/tools are needed to make precision loads from 7mm-08? Thanks, any help would be appreciated!

Exactly! A buddy just shot his new resized win 7-08 brass and the data off the chrono wasreally impressive. SD in single digits (as low as 2) for 4 of the 5 loads. Needless to say he was VERY happy converting from rem 260 to win 7-08 brass. YMMV of course.

Not sure I follow. Do you mean he had spreads as low as 2FPS?

Re: 260 from 7mm-08

What's really nice about Win 7-08 brass is how long it lasts, I have some with 15 firings, they have been annealed a couple times but still shoot good, I FL with Redding type S die with floating expander installed, and a .290 Ti bushing, after fire forming I ditch the expander.

Re: 260 from 7mm-08

I shoot a 7-08 in silhouette competition and I have some Win brass that has 20+ reloads. Granted, we don't load very hot in that game, but regardless... it is good stuff.

SD= Standard Deviation (dispersion from average) low numbers are good, generally below 10 is good for this game and is generally followed with extreme spreads of less then 20 fps.

Yeah, learned the formula 30 some years ago. I misread the statement as four of five rounds. My bad.

Re: 260 from 7mm-08

I start off with new 308 brass, neck it to 7/08 with no expander and then to 260 with no expander. Expand neck on separate operation and outside neck turn them to be about .001 to .002" smaller than chamber when loaded.

What kind of loads was he running to get those SDs?

Re: 260 from 7mm-08

He was using a 130gr bullet with H4350. Sorry I don't recall the exact loads, but they were between 42.4 and 43.2. Found out that he had them jammed 5 thousandths and was having trouble cycling them. They were getting caught underneath the feed ramp. He has since seated them longer shorter, of course, but I haven't heard any chrono data back on this new seating depth.

I seated them shorter nuckle head, 10 off the lands.
7-08 virgin brass
CCI primer
43.1 H4350
Fps 2869
Es 15
SD 6

So not as good as jamming them in where every load I tried had a SD of 4 or less.

Damn I had to edit that 3:30am post twice and still couldn't type what I meant

Coffee!!!!!

Re: 260 from 7mm-08

because an SD of 6 is so much worse than one of four......

I'm thinking of trying those 130 Norma's for my Creedmoor.
Quickload has them listed with a BC of .61!!!!!

I would like to see them shoot a little tighter, esp with you pulling the trigger, but as we discussed there are other variable on your rig that may be liable for that.
