I just put a new 260 barrel on my remington 700. I am having to keep the oal length at 2.75 to get the bolt to close easily and the bullets to not have rifling marks on them. I am using resized fc 243 brass and sierra 140s. At 2.8 the bolt closes hard and the bullets have rifling marks on them. Will this be a problem or is it just a shorter chamber than most. Most oal lenghts I have seen for 260 range from 2.85 to 2.95.

Load them short and rock on, as the chamber grows pressure will go down, so you'll need to add powder, my chamber started life the same as yours, IMHO it's a good thing.

I believe the important issue with rifling engagement is that you want them all to jump or all not to jump.

How far they jump can also be important, but I also think there are a lot of other factors that can override the effects, and that those need to be addressed before you can gain benefit from tuning jump distances.
