One of my 308's is going to get a face lift, likely to a 6.5 creedmore but I not 100% sure on that yet, Im also toying with the 7mm-08 as a choice. Doing the same thing you have in mind.
308 is great... I got five... but the last 200 yards can get quite sporting.

I am having my .308 converted to 7 mm 08, so I can shoot steel out to 1,000 yards.
The .308 was getting there, but I want to buck the wind more.

Although I really like the 260, I kinda agree with the earlier statement of 308 if you don't have one, otherwise a 260.
If you crunch the numbers on 260 downrange energy and compare the following:\
30 cal 160 grain bullet at 2600 fps
30 cal 175 grain bullet at 2600 fps
6.5mm 142 grain bullet at 2850 fps
The 260 really begins to shine around 400-500 yards in terms of retained energy compared to the 30 cal. And the 260 bullet usually doesn't go transonic until much further downrange.

I agree with most of the above also. If you have a 308 then go for a 260 if you want one. I have a 6.5 CM and it is nice due to lighter recoil and better trajectory for targets, but I always take my 308 hunting.

I have both the 308 and a 6.5x47 Lapua. In my opinion the 6.5 has the ballistic advantage over the 308, but with that being said my 308 gets used way more than my 6.5.
If this is going to be your one and only precision rifle, and you reload or plan too. I would say build the 260, especially if you want to do a lot of shooting at extended ranges. The ballistic advantage of the 260 will definately make it easier.

I don't reload and have a couple of 308, so I am also debating between 6.5CM and 7mm-08. Which round burns the barrel more? Pro and con comparison of the two?
260 Rem and 65.x47L would also be nice but my work schedule precludes me from putting more time into reloading at this point. Limited factory loads are just too few and too costly

308 vs 260 is like debating a pickup vs a sportscar, you need the pickup and want the sportscar. The pickup never breaks down (barrel life) but you can drive alot faster in the sportscar (extended range with higher BC's). YMMV

I reload.
After I acquired my .260 I fell on harder times. When the urge to divest certain potions of my collection became utterly unavoidable; the first thing that went was the .22-250, eventually followed by the .308's.
For .30 caliber, I reasoned that .30-06 would do as well or better, has at least the same degree of factory ammo availability, and besides, I was not going part with my Garand until at least 5 minutes after they started shovelling the backfill into my grave.
I am still in a tight financial situation, but all that really means is that I've mostly been waiting for the majority of my fellow shooters to join me in the poorhouse. This means I got seniority and dibs, and little else.
When I do manage to daydream of acquiring newer firearms, the .308's do not figure prominently in my fantasies.

After I acquired my .260 I fell on harder times. When the urge to divest certain potions of my collection became utterly unavoidable; the first thing that went was the .22-250, eventually followed by the .308's.
For .30 caliber, I reasoned that .30-06 would do as well or better, has at least the same degree of factory ammo availability, and besides, I was not going part with my Garand until at least 5 minutes after they started shovelling the backfill into my grave.
I am still in a tight financial situation, but all that really means is that I've mostly been waiting for the majority of my fellow shooters to join me in the poorhouse. This means I got seniority and dibs, and little else.
When I do manage to daydream of acquiring newer firearms, the .308's do not figure prominently in my fantasies.

The only thing I can see a 308 doing better than a 260, other than barrel life, is its ability to throw 180gr bullets for hunting.
Of course, a 140gr 6.5mm bullet has a slightly higher BC & SD than a 180gr 308 bullet and has proven PLENTY effective on animals up to elk...and even moose.
308 will do everything the OP wants to do...but the 260 will do everything <span style="font-style: italic">better</span>.

I've got both, and shoot them a lot! Things get interesting between 800-1000yds, and so far the 6.5 bullet out performs the 308 at that last 200yd stretch....that's just been my experience, over the last 2k rounds or so through each rifle.
I know some of you may or may not share the same thoughts....just my opinion.

+1, the Swedes have been killing moose for years with the 6.5x55.

Go for the 260 think you dont regret it... started out with 6.5X55 and have traveled true the whole register.. now i am back at the spring.. encountered some nice ones on the way tho...
specially like 7mmRM and the 280 remington and then fore som little bigger game the 358 Norma magnum think i going to build me a new bomstick in that kaliber.. but one thing for shore i will not be without a 6.5X55 .. and the 260 is almost the same...
Ps trained in 308 in military and have owned some rifles in that kaliber wile not unpleasant i am not impressed with it....

Also consiter barrel length.
If you are hunting in tight/small blinds, stalking through brush, ect a shorter barrel will be a better option.
The performance of a .308 on an 18-20" platform is better than that of a .260.

I have a Tikka T3 Lite that I trimmed back to 20"s that is my "general purpose" carbine. It is a .308 and I find it to be about ideal as an all around piece.
But that may be drifting a bit toward another animal all together...

A given bullet needs a given velocity to reach a given distance supersonic, but the mayhem inside the barrel (and especially in the throat) can be cut down a bit by using a lesser load in a longer barrel. That's my 'secret weapon' approach to better barrel life.
Another is to develop your load for a reasonable velocity at the target. If it's going over 1300fps out there (wherever 'there' actually is), my first question is, why? Unless you're actually pushing for extreme distance accuracy, the bigger bullet at the higher velocity is a monumental waste of bore life. I shoot 140/142's at 2850fps for 1Kyd, but use 95's with the minimum load for varmint distances.

While I tend to run only one load for one rifle, mostly in the interest of time management and knowing that rifle/load, I do not usually push a load too hard. The 20 inch gun pictured above is obviously not one I use as a long range gun, it is simply a general purpose hunting piece/ scout rifle.
I have shot it out to 600 yards on my 1/2 sized MGM IPSC targets and first round hits are no issue with a solid rest.
The light little gun shows every flaw in your fundamentals though. I have found that using the 2 point sling (VTAC) aids in my accuracy when shooting over my hunting pack, or over a log/rock, using a jacket or gloves as a cushion in between.
It serves it's purpose very well, as it balances in the hand and also carries very nicely while climbing in the steep terrain where I tend to hunt. It is short enough that when I get into the thick northside timber, it is easier to manuever through the growth.
On the steep side slopes the little gun is a joy compared to others I have used. Everything is a compromise of some sort, and this is my ideal "all around" .308.
In regards to the LR game, longer barrels, with moderate loads is a very sound recipe for a long barrel life and consistant results.

After I acquired my .260 I fell on harder times. When the urge to divest certain potions of my collection became utterly unavoidable; the first thing that went was the .22-250, eventually followed by the .308's.
For .30 caliber, I reasoned that .30-06 would do as well or better, has at least the same degree of factory ammo availability, and besides, I was not going part with my Garand until at least 5 minutes after they started shovelling the backfill into my grave.
I am still in a tight financial situation, but all that really means is that I've mostly been waiting for the majority of my fellow shooters to join me in the poorhouse. This means I got seniority and dibs, and little else.
When I do manage to daydream of acquiring newer firearms, the .308's do not figure prominently in my fantasies.

Are you shooting the 175SMK's or 180 Bergers and if you are what kind of MV's are you getting and out of what length barrel?

No sadness on my behalf is necessary. Over the years, this has become my natural state, and I believe I thrive upon it. I certainly harbor no regrets. I only mention it in passing as an explanation of why I have, as many might believe, an unforgivable lack of .308's. IMHO, with .30-'06's in abundance (3), I feel the .308's would be, at best, redundant. For the short action, the .260 (or 7-08, I think they are that closely matched) does my heavy lifting. For lighter work, the .222 and .223 serve me well. As 7mm's go, since I also have a pair of .280 Rems, the 7-08 is, for me, also redundant.
