.260 Rem : varget and 140 grain Amax

Question about REL17?

I DO NOT have a 260 but have the itch and have been reading everything I can find about the 6.5 family to help make up my decision. This article below was very helpful and discusses powders and REL17 as a favorite but I don't hear about it for the 260. Is there a reason why? It sounds like he is very impressed with it, albeit back in 2009.

In the below article, on page 2, he states for the .260 (the article was printed before Lapua was making 260 Brass)

Final load: 139gr Lapua Scenar @ 2820 fps, 40.7gr H4350, CCI BR2, Lapua .243 brass necked up.
From a 100-yard zero, this load needs 7.4 mils of elevation to 1000 yards, and will drift 53 inches with a 10 mph cross. Accuracy is excellent at 1/4 MOA.

Alliant's new Reloder 17 powder is a <nobr>perfect match</nobr> to the .260 Remington. Testing over the last 9 months indicates that most shooters can get an additional 125-175 fps with the 139-142's using RL17!

RL17 is more temp sensitive than H4350, in the same way RL15 is more temp sensitive than Varget.

That said, RL17 does work well and can provide a velocity increase...and there is predictability in the velocity increase (roughly 1fps/degree).

I have roughly 1k 140 AMAX I'd swap for 142SMK or perhaps 130 Berger if anyone is interested.


....And Varget works great with 123-130gr pills in the 260. A buddy uses it almost exclusively with 140s, too.
