I am wanting to do some competition shooting. I am curently shooting a .308 and I am thinking of changing it to a .260 Rem. Is the Barrel life similar to a .308 or is it shorter?

308 can go 10,000 rounds on a good barrel, but 260 might be closer to 2,500....but really how many rounds do you expect to shoot a year?

Re: .260 Rem??

I want to stick with a 6.5mm option. I went to a competition last Sat and seen the .260 in action. It is such a flat shooter compared to a .308.

Re: .260 Rem??

I'm building a 308 and I'm already looking at my next built being 260 rem. Not sure about the barrel life question I can ask my builder William Roscoe with la precision rifles...he likes the 260 rem and has several impressive groups at a grand with his..

Re: .260 Rem??

I love shooting my .308. But I am thinking in terms of competition shooting. The .260 (I should say the 6.5mm bullets) has alot of followers in the competion arena (compared to a .308, from what I have seen). There is less recoil and shoots flatter.

Re: .260 Rem??

Don't let lowlight see this thread!

He's been posting alot about the shooter winning competitions not the cartridge. Which I completely agree with although I lose alot no matter whats in my hands... I don't think I could bear to see that conversation for the 10th time in the last month

Cheater. I also heard the Prometheus is for cheaters. What do you know about that?

Re: .260 Rem??

I have two 26" barrels with 2000 through each of them on my TRG. The .308 bore and throat still look like new through a bore scope but the .260 looks so badly fire-cracked I can't believe it still shoots under 0.5moa. Both loads are moderate, ie 155 Scenars @ 2890fps (H4895) and 139 Scenars @ 2775fps (H4350) respectively and I don't "machine gun" in matches. I will consider myself lucky if I make it to 2,500 through the .260.

Re: .260 Rem??

My 260 has 2700+ and still shoots well under .5 MOA. This winter it did 3-shots (I know 3-shots) in 1.75" at 525 yards. Had the barrel set back at 1700 rounds, up to this point it had been my F-Class rifle which is not easy on barrels. Stopped shooting F-Class matches at that point and started shooting tactical matches which is much easier on barrels. I'll have it scoped next trip to the gunsmiths.

Re: .260 Rem??

It's true, I do love my 260 but, a 1-13 twist 308 shooting 155 Scenars is strong in its own right. Terry Cross proved that even an 18" 308 is capable of winning when in the right hands. Shooter skill will always trump exterior ballistics but, when both are coupled together, the sky's the limit.

As far as accurate barrel life, the 308 will have the edge but the 260 should be good for 1,500-2,000 rounds.

Terry could probably win with a Daisy Red Rider............

That's the funniest thing I've read all day.

Some good advice here though. Switching calibers isn't going to magically make you a better shooter. Most .308's are probably more accurate than their owners. But if you feel like the .260 gives you a better chance in competition I say go for it. You can neck down your .308 brass and save some money too.

Re: .260 Rem??

I used to shoot the .260 Remington in a custom NRA highpower bolt gun (fully custom based on a M70 action). The 28" Palma contour Krieger was fine to shoot offhand and it positively hammered in 300 rapid fire and 600 slow fire.

The 260's advantage at 300 was so great that while 223 and 308 shooters would be moved almost out of the 10 ring if the wind picked up during the string, at worst I would get some mid ring 10s. That was shooting a Scenar 123 at 2800 fps.

When I gave up shooting xtc and went to NRA prone and tactical events, I standardized on 308. Why? Because the 260 is a barrel burner compared to it. The less money and time I get to spend on barrels and gunsmithing is the more I have to shoot and train.

Training more and shooting more will improve your scores far more reliably than a couple of inches of drift per mph.

Holy sh**! I didnt say anything about making me a better shooter.. I love shooting my .308. I was just looking at my options. I like to keep an open mind about things and you assume that I am trying to make myself a better shooter just by changing calibers!!

I will probably keep it a .308 and maybe do a custom .260 next year with a surgeon action, a KMW Sentinel stock, Kreiger barrel, and a muzzle brake (which I think would be a great looking rifle).

Re: .260 Rem??

Throughout the winter, I was scheming on a 6.5 caliber bt I just kept coming back to the barrel life issue. Personally (and it IS very personal) I decided to stick with 308. It was tough though... had a devil on one shoulder saying DO IT - its just a couple hundred bucks a year. Meanwhile the 308 angel was on the other shoulder saying "I've always treated you right, and I perform"

So this year its 308 for me. Don't know if I can fight off the 6.5 devil again next winter!

He's doing a .223 for me now. He has been very helpful with different questions that I have had. Easy guy to deal with.
