I am about to start loading some rounds for my Savage 260. So far I have new brass, H4350 and H4831 powder and CCI 200 primers. Seems like quite a few guys prefer the BR2 or Federal 210 primers for their loads. Has anyone compared the benchrest primers to standard primers? Not sure if I should buy some to try out. Thanks guys

Re: 260 rem

Try to find some Wolf Large Rifle Magnum primers and give them a try. I switched to them a couple years ago and they are all I run in standard cartridges....a little less $ too.

I shot CCI BR2's and Federal 210 Match for years and never saw any difference in them.

Re: 260 rem

Wolf LR primers have been working very well for me.
nosler brass
130 VLD
45.9 gr h4350
wolf lr primer
2990 fps
13 fps es
5 fps sd
I have this bullet seated out a little with .010 jump.
If you plan on using this load work your way up to 45.9gr.

Re: 260 rem

I use the standard primers for sighters, foulers, hunting ammo, Garand ammo, and for load development.

(edited to add: I use H-4350, CCI-200 or BR-2, 120/140 Nosler BT/SRA SMK/HDY 140 A-Max, as well as 142SMK. My hunting loads use 120/140 Nos BT/Partition and/or HDY 129/140 SST. My typical charge runs from 43.8-45.0 gr (the latter for the 120s). Varmint loads use HDY 95 V-Max and 47gr of H4350.)

The match primers only go into bolt gun ammo intended specifically when firing for score.

While cost is a factor for me, it's more about what's appropriate to the task. I won't waste a match primer on tasks of secondary importance, and I won't invest my time crafting match ammo, and then stick a non-match primer into it as long as I have the option.

I work under the asssumptions that the performance is adequately similar, and the costs are not. Exact equivalence has no meaning in a system that is dependent upon human performance. We're not machines, and maybe that's the main point.

Re: 260 rem

I used to use the BR2'S but have since switched to the 200's, and haven't noticed any diff. When I run out of those I'm gonna try the Wolf.

Both powders you've got will run well. I've been running the H4350 to about 2840 out of my 26" krieger. A friend of mine has got the same setup as me, but has been runnin IMR 4831 and been getting around 100 fps more velocity with good accuracy. So, I picked up a pound of the H4831SC to see if I could match his results. Haven't had a chance to do any testing yet. It would be interesting to hear your results between the two powders.

Post up some results when you get 'em.
