Does anybody have any loads for the 260 remington in an AR that has worked well for them? I have searched for some and all i can find is fro bolt guns and i know that only certain powders will reliably cycle. I will be shooting 140 grainers by the way.Thanks.

Re: 260 Remington Loads?

what i found works best for me with my dpms LR-260 follows.
vihtavuori n160 for powder.so far this has given me very good velocity (2750fps)and the tightest groups.i shoot mostly 139g lapuas or 142mk. 43g of n160 in remington brass is about the max for me.
these are on the ragged edge for pressure.
i've never had any cycling problems even with the lighter 107g bullets.

Re: 260 Remington Loads?

Whatever you go with work it up carefully. My LR-260 shows pressure signs anywhere near 2700 fps. I shoot 142 MK's at 2630-40 fps. My load is 40.2 grs of H4350 and it's easy on the brass as well as the gun.

Re: 260 Remington Loads?

Thanks everybody for your help. I started with 120 grainers but couldnt get them to cycle reliably and they didnt shoot worth a hoot anyway. Then i have tried a few with the 139 gr lapuas but my rifle seems to like the hornady A-Max alot which is nice seeing how i plan to use this for hunting as well.

Re: 260 Remington Loads?

140 amax,42.0 H4350 (or up to 47.0 H4831sc), r-p case, cci br-2
142 SMK, 42.5 H4350 (or up to 48.0 H4831sc), r-p case, cci br-2

All at 2.80" OAL, bullets coated with one shot spray lube prior to seating.
2650ish in a 20" 1:7.5 LR-260
Very tight extreme spreads with all SD's comming in less than 10 fps.

You can't cram too much H4831sc.
H4350 started to enlarge primer pockets a little when I was up one grain higher.

Re: 260 Remington Loads?

My load is similiar to Danr's.

142 SMKs, 39.0gr H-4350, but in necked down LC brass (7.62x51). Velocities are around 2560-2580. The LC brass has less internal volume than rem brass. I have estimated an equivalent load in rem brass to be between 39.7 and 40.0 grains.

I observed pressure signs when trying loads in the 42 grain area.

Re: 260 Remington Loads?

Hey guys I'm monitoring this thread because I have DPMS LR308 which I'm in the the process of converting to a 260 rem (waiting on BBL from Krieger). To the ones shooting the Sierra 142gr I was wondering If you have compared them to the 139gr Lapua and if so your thoughts would be appreciated. Not many shooters are running this caliber at my local range so first hand info is very tough to get without hitting the forums. They both seem to be the preferred choices along with H4350 powder. Most shooting with this rifle will be done from 500yd-1000yd with an occasional trip to the local range (100yd).

Re: 260 Remington Loads?

The 142 SMK runs at the lowest pressure (with the same propellant weights) of all the 140 weights I've tried.
Velocity with the 142 SMK is usually highest of all when I work up too.
The SMK's BC seems a little higher than stated by Sierra (So is the 140 A-max)
It's a pisser my rifle doesn't shoot them better.
I have not been overly impressed with the Lapua 139.
The BC was not as good as Lapua states.
That bullet didn't seem to shine anywhere in my testing.

I've run up to 48.0 H4831sc, and that is my favorite propellant for this weight class.

Re: 260 Remington Loads?

The load I posted above is for a DMPS LR-260. I've only tried the 142s though. I heard that the SMKs are more tolerant to a longer jump to the lands than some of the more secant profiled bullets. I believe mine are seated around 0.080" off the lands (2.800" COAL). They shoot fine.

With regard to a corrected BC, what are other shooters using? I've always noticed that my POI is high for my generated dope based on Litz's BC and chrono'd velocities.

Re: 260 Remington Loads?

OK. Good info; it helps me confirm my own views.

I also see the 142 running with less pressure, and the 139 Scenar with the most I've seen (not a bad thing, I just need to understand this thing about the bullet, but I'm using the other two for my purposes.). The 140 A-Max is also a lot better bullet than I had expected it to be.

I have run the .260/142 to max (overflowing, 50+) charge with H-4831SC, and never seen alarming pressure signs. Only problem, not the best velocities, but it's a nice, relatively safe, comfortable propellent.

Seriously, this chambering really like a loooonger barrel with the heavies. I suspect that with along enough barrel, the heavies could run right fine in a 1:9" twist.

With my barrel I get a tiny velocity improvement with H4831 over H4350.
I've settled on 47.0 for the 4831.
Pressure appears lower for the same velocity with H4350, accuracy and SD's are great.
Temp stability is great too.

Safety is always a nice bonus.
I'd be hard pressed to ruin any brass, let alone blow up my 260 using this powder.

Re: 260 Remington Loads?

Ah, see; when I did my H-4831 testing I was using the original 24" Savage factory barrel. BTW, if H-4831 is working OK for you, you might also try Ramshot Magnum.

Re: 260 Remington Loads?

On a recent build on a 24" dpms 260 my loads are, 123 sie=39.9 Imr 4064, 139 lapua=45.8 H4831sc. I shot both of them this weekend out to 830yds. The 123s are my pick out to that range but there was not much wind.

Re: 260 Remington Loads?

The 120's are great performers in the 260.
I wish my rifle liked them.
In reality they seem to need about the same wind correction as the 140's even though my charts say otherwise.
They shot 5 moa flatter at 1000 yards than the 140's for me.
Even less recoil.

I have been having a really hard time seating the 140-amaxs. Does the lube affect the powder?

Re: 260 Remington Loads?

140 Amax
CCI 200
Remington brass w/.0035" tension
h4350
2.800" COAL

I ran from 41.0 to 44.5gr with no signs on the brass. Above 44gr had over gassing issues and unreliable ejection. Velocity in my 1:8 26" krieger was 2625ish at 41gr and 2850 at 44.5gr.
