I am fixing to start a .260 Remington build with a Krieger barrel finished out at around 24-26". I have a Remington long action 30-06 that is virtually brand new and was almost free after I part it out. I also have a McM A5 short action stock. I can go either way with the build and am wondering if would be better to build this off a long action so I can seat bullets further out if need be. I haven't loaded any .260's so I am not sure what the potential OAL would be. Or would a short action suffice? If I go long action what bottom metal would one recommend?

Short action for sure. Using the correct reamer for your required COAL will keep you from having to seat the bullets so far out that they won't fit in the mag. Good luck.

if you use a short action and Alpha type 2 mags, you can seat the bullets out to a max length of 2.985 inches.

"The Alpha Type 2 magazine has an internal OAL of 2.985"

Combine that with shooting the target 6.5mm 140 grain Berger Bullets (part number: 26401) and once you seat the bullet correctly the cartridge will be a perfect fit in the Alpha Type 2 mags.

G7 BC = 0.313
Barrel Twist = 1 in 8" or faster
Part number = 26401

Short action all the way. If you're worried about needing to seat the VLDs out, talk to Glenn @ Seekins. He has the Seekins WSM DBM that has 3.140" OAL. You will have to modify your feed ramp/port opening on the bottom of your receiver (just a simple notch) to accommodate the longer OAL of the Seekins DBM. This gives you the ability to squeeze every bit of powder capacity out of the .260 case capacity, but in return you lose barrel life -- and possibly accuracy by going above your accuracy node, so it's a hit or miss gamble. I will note that there are a lot of .260 shooters winning competitions without stretching the OAL to squeak out that last bit of velocity.

If you do decide to go with the long action I would upgrade to the 6.5x55. Not much since going LA and staying with the .260.

Keep your powder dry,
