I sent a rifle down the road today to get a new .260 barrel screwed on, so now I gotta buy some more stuff because this will be a new caliber for me.
I'm kinda partial to Forster dies, but everything else is pretty much undecided. I'll probably start out with the Remington brass, and maybe snatch up some of the new Lapua if it ever shows up, but I'm in the dark on bullets, powder, and anything else that I'll need to load up stuff for this caliber in particular, and longer range shooting in general.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Re: .260 Remington starter kit?

for inside of 300yds i use 107 seirras. for over 300 yds on paper i use 142 smk. for hunting i use 140 amaxes. all over h-4350.

Re: .260 Remington starter kit?

I went with the Norma brass with 123 Lapua bullet over H4350. Also using 130 grain Berger VLD over Varget. Barrel breakin was with H4831SC with 140 grain JLK and it looked real good too. I have been using Fed210GMM primers. Cruise the 260 information in the reloading section too.

Re: .260 Remington starter kit?

It seems like the heavier weight 6.5 bullets are kinda scarce??

Re: .260 Remington starter kit?

FW707 pick up some 243 lapua and a sinclair exspander die at .26 cal you wont have any trouble did it with my 700 cdl with a kreiger, its a great rig.I run 120 GKs and this is wickedly deadly on white tails.

Re: .260 Remington starter kit?

I just resized 100 pieces of 7mm-08 Winchester brass. It was a breeze and the Win brass appears to be much better quality than the Remmy stuff I've been shooting. Sportsmans Warehouse had 50 pices of Remington 260, which was out of stock, for $21.99 & 7-08 Win, which was in stock, was $22.99. I think it's worth the $1.00 for better quality.

Re: .260 Remington starter kit?

ive been shooting the 260 for quite some time . mostly 140's in nosler ( accubond and competition ) , berger and sierra . all with 43.5 grn of h-4350 . its a bit hot by the book but very accurate in my 29.5in barrel. +1 for the lapua 243 brass , works very well.

Re: .260 Remington starter kit?

RE17 & 140s. Killer combo with lots of speed if you want it.

What the specifics of your 4350/Scenar load if you dont mind me asking?

What barrel length?

Re: .260 Remington starter kit?

With a 10 pound combination of rifle and 10X scope, I get tiny groups at 100 yards with 100 gr bullets, RP 260 brass.

100 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip moly coated # 26100 bullet moly coated ,
45.0 gr canister IMR4895, 2.940" over all length, almost no insertion of
the bullet into the neck, due to the short bullet and long throat.
Quickload prediction 61,328 psi 3261 fps
chronographs as 3,236 fps

Re: .260 Remington starter kit?

ive used 140 AMAXs, Remington brass, and H4831SC (47 grs) with CCI BR2 primers

Re: .260 Remington starter kit?

A bit hotter than some shoot but in my 1:8 Lilja 3 groove 44gr of H4350 with a 139 Scenar is great to 1000 yards. Gets 2600fps in a 15" barrel. Haven't tried the SMK yet but a lot do like them but prob have to drop the charge and work back up for that.

Using Rem brass and after a few reloads primer pocket loosens up a bit but shot all of last summer matches on that brass with no problems. Would be nice to try some of that new Lapua though.

Re: .260 Remington starter kit?

rem 260 brass is the worst brass i have ever used.. it shoots reaaly well in my rifle

i also have resized lapua 308 brass.. alot of work shoots really well

win 7mm/08 easy to form as well.. shoots really well

h4350 123-142 gr bullets cant go wrong

Re: .260 Remington starter kit?

Had good luck necking up Winchester 243. The only issue Ive every noticed with Remington is the primer pockets have a tendency to lossen up a bit fast.

Used H4831SC with no issues. 142 Sierra, 139 Lapua's have always shot well.

Good luck

Re: .260 Remington starter kit?

I am loving the 142 SMk, win 7-08 Brass, and H4831 SC out of a 28". Hard to beat it IMHO

Re: .260 Remington starter kit?

I use Hornady New Dimension F/L and seating dies.

The tapered neck expander make expanding the necks of .243 Win brass to .260 Rem size easier. I use Winchester .243 and 7-08 brass, simply run through the F/L die, to make very serviceable .260 Rem brass.

A caution, the collet type lockdown for the decap/expander shaft is tricky and can slip.

Short range (to 300yd) is well handled with the HDY 95gr V-Max. Mid range (to 600-ish) works well with Nosler 120gr Ballistic Tip. For LR I use 142SMK or 140 A-Max. SST's and Partitions should make excellent hunting bullets, chosen according to game type and distance. I am not a big fan of LR hunting. H-4350 works with everything I mentioned here. A good substitute is Ramshot Hunter.

Re: .260 Remington starter kit?

Thanks everybody for all the information!!
I ordered dies today. It looks like I'll be starting out with the H4350, and necking up the Winchester .243 brass, just because I have some new in the bag already.
Looks like bullets are gonna be whatever I can find. The places I usually order from are really hit and miss on the 6.5 bullets, especially the VLD's and Scenars.
It'll be a while before the rifle shows up, so maybe I'll be able to catch stuff in stock and have at least a small variety on hand when it arrives.
I'm hoping the 130 Hunting VLD's will be accurate. I've read a lot of good stuff about them.

Thanks again for all the help.
