Seemed to have found a good load for my 24" .260 UGSW build. 42.6g RL17 140 berger vld. Anyone else found similar results as I am new to reloading?

Re: .260 RL17 load

I tried RL17 with 139gr Scenars. Best accuracy (about 1/2 moa at 100 yds) was at 42.5 grains. Velocity was 2812 fps. Standard deviation was 17 which is not very good. 43.0 grains got me 2877 fps, but the accuracy was not very good and standard deviation was 29. This was with my TRG-22 chambered in .260 Rem, 26" barrel.

I gave up on RL17 after a few test loads. H-4350 and H-4831 produced much better accuracy, consistency and just as much or more velocity. The felt recoil with RL17 was also noticeably sharper. Add that to the fact that RL17 has a reputation of being hard on barrels and I just couldn't find a reason to continue testing it.

Re: .260 RL17 load

Haven't tried any 140s yet, but 44.5gr RL-17 with a 123 A-Max and RP brass gave me just over 3100fps from a 26" barrel, and a 3 shot group of 0.61" (with a called flyer) during initial load development.

I hope to do further RL-17 testing next week with new Lapua brass and both the 123 and 140 A-Max.

Re: .260 RL17 load

Thanks,

I will chrono this saturday and post it. No time before the first competition to move to a different powder unless I hit it just right. What is your load on the 139 with h4350? Never heard about rl being hard on barrels, but it seems there are way more people using h4350.

43.5gr of H-4350 has been working well for me. Sub 1/2 moa accuracy and about 2850 fps.

Exact same load in my 26" .260. I used Fed210M and ww 7/08 brass.

For that 3 shot group, did you perhaps mean .061"? A three shot group of 0.61 would not be considered very good for a precision rifle.

No, I meant exactly what I wrote - 0.61".

Which I don't think is at all bad considering 1. I don't shoot benchrest, 2. the rifle was a Savage I cobbled together in my basement for less than $1000 total including optic, 3. was shot off sand-filled socks, 4. included a called flyer which opened the group up from a two-shot bughole, and 5. was during initial load development, ie. the very first rounds with that powder/charge/bullet put down the barrel.

Re: .260 RL17 load

.61 isn't half bad for off the shelf sound good Boiler

Range went well for me

Shooting around .25 or less
42.6g RL(RE)17
Berger 140g VLD target
2840 AVG FPS from a 24" .260.

Rifle is a UGSW Infidel.

I am happy. Now I just have to learn how it shoots at distance. Mirage was bad today, but we were able to dial in out to 800 yds on 12' plates. 1000 was just to damn blurry in the mirage. Got close, but no f'n cigar by the time we got low on ammo.
