I've got an Interarms Mark X in 270 that is in need of a new barrel so I was considering doing something a little different with it. It's got a great action and trigger and I enjoy shooting it but I already have another 270 and want something different. I know the options are countless but I was looking for suggestions as to which direction to go. It'll be used for mostly hunting deer and hogs with 200 being the max distance and occasionally on the range out to 500. I know this is a topic that can get complicated quickly with the amount of knowledge and experience in here. Simplicity and convenience are the key factors I'm looking for. And I don't reload, so availability of factory ammo. Thanks for the suggestions fellas.

Man, that factory ammo restriction really puts a stop to a lot of the fun you could have with this. 6.5x55 Swede, I guess? The other option would be 30-06, I s'pose.

I know. I quit reloading a few years ago. Just didn't see the reason anymore. For what I do and my needs it just wasn't economical. Especially when adult responsibilities take priority over shooting. There are some great factory loads out these days that are more than sufficient for what I do. And the wife appreciates the extra room I made when I sold everything.

Got an '06 as well. I'm afraid I'll end up sticking with the 270 and it'll collect even more dust.

With you having an 3006 and a 270 already and dont shoot out beyond 500 I guess I would recommend a 243? Or maybe a 22-250 though they arent traditional for a long action. Both of those are smaller lending itself towards getting shot more/more fun and have ammo availability and though they have short barrel lives if you only shoot occasionally it should still be a long while before you burn them out. Or 308, military runs it in long configuration I think on some platforms.

I've got both a 243 and 308 as well. My 308 is my night time hog hunter topped with an ATN. Love that thing!! I thought about the 22-250. That could be a fast little round. I'd like to keep the long action though.

Maybe a 260?? Any ideas on the difficulty of that project? I also read somewhere that it's possible to make it a Grendel with a new bolt face. Anyone have any experience with this??

7-08 would be just a barrel change but it is a short action cartridge. A 280 or 284 would be as easy and allow additional top end performance over the 08 and allow you to take advantage of the extra length allowable. If just hogs at 200 then an 08 will be easy. If you want to go further on targets or steel than 500 the 280 would be a better choice for max performance.

You shouldn't have an issue with the feeding of a short in a long action but it is possible depending on your set up that the rounds could pop out prematurely and not feed well. No way to know from this end of the internet but for you to feed a couple short rounds through it and see if they hang up anywhere.
