Is anyone getting over 3000fps with the 130g bullets out of a 24in barrel? I really want to cut this barrel at 24in. Ive had 26in barrels on hunting rifles before, and they are kind of annoying.

Yes sir, try 7828,IMR 4831 and magPro, all will get over 3000 with a 24" tube.

Bill

3,000 FPS should not be an issue out of a 24" barrel with any of the popular powders for the .270 Win and a 130 gr. bullet. I am running 60.0 gr. of H4831sc and a 130 gr. Barnes T-TSX in Winchester brass with CCI BR-2 primers and am getting right at 3,000 FPS out of a 22" barrel. With a 24" barrel you should easily get 3,050-3,100 FPS depending on what powder you choose.

I get 3205 out of a 26" so you should get 3140 or so, which is exactly what the old factory ammo was listed at and achieved with 24" barrels.

I get 3099 with a 140gr. Berger VLD, and was getting 3148 with 130gr. Barnes XBTs with a 24" barrel.
I get 2910 with a 150gr. NAB LR, but that is not a hot load. Just the most accurate.

From what I am reading, the cored bullets like the Barnes Triple Shock, Hornady Interbond, Nosler Accubond….etc…..really shine with expansion when pushed "hard". That is why I am concerned. If its even true. I have H4350, IMR 4350, IMR 4064, H4831SC, and R22 to play around with. My lyman book is only showing over 3000fps when using compressed loads. Does that sound right? Ive never shot a compressed load and I have some reservations about it...

Compressed loads are fine. Use a drop tube of 10" or so on the higher charges.

No, that doesn't sound right. You should easily get over 3,000 FPS without compressed loads. I know the loading manuals will list some of the higher charges as compressed, but remember, those things are written and edited by the lawyers. Plus, the .270 has been around since 1925 so there are a lot of older rifles out there that probably can't handle the higher pressures that a more modern gun can.

With my load (60.0 gr of H4831sc / 130 Barnes T-TSX / Win Brass / CCI BR-2) I get 3,000 FPS out of a 22" Tikka T-3. My manuals list this as the max load, however, during load development I went to 61.0 gr. and was just seeing pressure signs there.

If I were you, I would run an OCW on the IMR4350, the H4831sc, and Reloader 22. My guess is you will see the best velocity with R22 then IMR4350 then H4831sc. You will get the best temp stability in the reverse order. 3,000 + FPS should be easy for a .270 with a 24" barrel and no pressure signs.

This is a 168gr Barnes T-TSX fired from my .308 recovered from a 300 lb. boar. The muzzle velocity was 2,700 FPS and impact velocity would have been around 2,450 +/- FPS. The expanded diameter is .608 (almost double) and the retained weight is 167.0 gr. This is an extremely accurate load in my rifle (.5 MOA to 300 yards). Don't worry too much about chasing speed. As you can see the Barnes open up just fine at moderate velocities and are plenty accurate.

Thanks for the info guys. My 270 should be done this week. Its out for Cerakote right now. And Im waiting for my NF 2.5-10x42 NXS Compact. Should have that this week as well. Gun comes in under 10lbs, and should be really nice to hunt with. But I don't have much time for load development. I have a black bear hunt coming up quick. I will definitely take your advice on the powder charges. And the visual of the expansion on that triple shock is encouraging. Ive hunted the past few years with my tactical style rifles, 6.5x47, 300winmag, etc….they are heavy and not fun to lug around. This lightweight 270 should do just the trick. Lot of nostalgia there too with the caliber. I love it.

I gotta m-700 .270the best I canget outta mine is55.gr ofh-4831ssc ,weight sorted brass ,shoots 1hole 5shot groups at 100yards .I tried to work up the charge ,but get high pressure signs chuttin 130 sst .don't know how fast no chrono. book lists it at 2700fps.gettin sick of tryin the same combo might switch to sierra and imr 7828,or h1000.

My .270 is a Weatherby and I have my best load for the 129gr Barnes LRX BT is 54.9gr of H4350. This is what my rifle likes and this is NOT compressed and I am getting consistent velocities of 3054 from Chrono and the DOPE matches up out to 600 yards.
