270 Win Powder and Bullets?

Re: 270 Win Powder and Bullets?

I have been loading the 270 for about 20 years and as much as I "want to like" the Nosler ballistic tip bullets I just cant ever get them to group like I can other brands. Normally in thee 270 I shoot 130s and 140s from Hornady Speer or Sierra. I run them out long using a stoney point length gauge to get them close to the lands maybe .010 back. Then for powder I shoot 4350 and 4831 but for some odd reason 3031 always shoots good for me also in 270 which is odd because its a little on the fact side. 44 grains of it behind a 130 grain seems to work well though you better double check that charge to be sure. Another one is 4064 that is too fast for the 270-130 grain combo but has always worked well for me.

Same here^^^

Re: 270 Win Powder and Bullets?

I have sierra 130 gamekings and h4350 for now to start. I am also getting H4831 from my dad. I was thinking about using seirra 135g matchking for some 500 yard shooting. I haven't worked up any loads yet. I'm waiting to get the rifle back from my gun smith.

Re: 270 Win Powder and Bullets?

I'm running 110-grain Sierra Pro Hunter soft point spitzers over Varget (more than I should probably say - work up to your own maximum) at about 3,400 fps for mule deer in three different rifles (a 700 my wife and I share and the 2 Savage Axis my boys have). Within 3" of point of aim out to about 320 yards. One shot kills on a big buck at about 140 yards in the neck, on another big buck at 295 yards right through the heart, a small buck at 375 yards through the lungs, and a good doe at about 120 yards in the neck. With the exception of the doe, which was hit low in the neck and bled out quickly (one of the boys got a little too excited for good shot placement), none of the deer went more than about 20 feet.

I've also worked up some 130-grain SSTs over RL-17 that shoot very well - everybody would rather shoot the 110s, though - a little less recoil, and a little longer maximum point blank range with the 110s.

Re: 270 Win Powder and Bullets?

I like H4350 or Ramshot to run 110gr bullets at 3400fps. I use the Barnes 110TTSX for big game and switch to the Hornady 110 Vmax for practice. Both show a field BC of about .369 and shoot over lapping groups out to 600yards. I have tried to stretch it further but wind starts blowing the 110s all over the place.

Wasnt that the Jack O'conner load? Fill a case with 4350 and then stuff a boolit on top !!

I killed 8 mule deer between 329 and 510 yards with with a 270 using 50 gr IMR4895 130 gr Nosler Ballistic tip moly 3.34" with a 22" barrel.

I only got 2875 fps at the muzzle, but the rifle only weights 8.75 pounds with scope, sling, bipod, and ammo.

Re: 270 Win Powder and Bullets?

As you may notice, a 270 is not too fussy. One thing I learned is the tried and true 130 grain bullets are a very good choice unless you have a specific application. You will not go wrong with either 4350 or 4831, any brand. BB
