I have a custom 280AI, it has a 26" douglas barrel, 1-9 twist, 700ADL action, jewell trigger. I am shooting 168gr bergers. I can't quite get a very good group at 200 yards. I have tried H4831SC, H1000 and MagPro. Any input that might help me out.?

Re: 280 Ackley Improved loads

Well in Wimbleton Team match this year my teammate who shoots 280AI forgot his ammo so he shot my straight 280 load of 61.5gr H1000 with a molly coated 175 SMK. Seemed to work ok held 10 ring.

My go to loads are for warmish temps between (I find rl-17 temp sensitive) 45 and 80 degrees are rl-17 56.5grs with the 168 vld for 2950fps from a 23.5" Krieger barrel good to 1000 yards, and Vihtavouri N165 62grs doing 2880fps been shooting this load at 600yards and I can do half moa at that ditance and i will be using this load for more colder temps where i hunt, bullets are just off the lands like 005"-010". work up to these loads as they are border max in my gun.

Re: 280 Ackley Improved loads

my custom 280 AI is on its way back as we speak from CorBon. I had Pete and the crew do a load development on it before I ever got to shoot it. Will keep you guys posted on what powder he used. I know we used 162 AMax's.

Re: 280 Ackley Improved loads

280 AI Goto loads I use. Work up. Normal discliamers apply. YMVMV. Use at your own risk.

26" Bartlein 1:9, 1650+ rounds.....still shoots lights out!

Match:
Nosler brass- fireformed & annealed, 168g Berger VLD .030 off lands, Fed 215M primer, 61.5g Retumbo, 2840 fps/13 ES, .504 MOA at 200 yds.

Hunting:
Nosler brass- fireformed & annealed, 160g Accubond .075 off lands, Fed 215M primer, 64.0g Retumbo, 3003 fps/7 ES, .278 MOA at 200 yds.

Re: 280 Ackley Improved loads

Loaded up some H4831SC last night and hit the range, also used F210M primers. Someone suggested I make my zero at 300 yards as the bergers don't stabilize until farther out. My best group of 4 shots were all in a 6" target, not happy at all. They were pushing 2900-2975fps. 3 days into hunting season and still no groups worth trying to find a buck to kill. Does the slower burning powder need the magnum primers???

Re: 280 Ackley Improved loads

Your advice was spot on, am going with the exact accubond load you posted. Thank you so much for the advice.

Re: 280 Ackley Improved loads

here's the load we're running in my 280 AI;

Nosler Brass, 54.5 gr reloader 17, 162 gr AMAX, FED 215M Primers. Average velocity 2980 FPS. .210" average group 5 shots
