280 remington still a solid round?

Yes it is a solid round in terms of performance. Getting to be very little factory ammo for it, so it is not far from being a reloaders cartridge. Mine shoots 145 gr LRX’s at 3,013 fps very well. You can still source plenty of ammo from semicustom reloaders, Superior, Custom Reloads of Dallas etc.

Were I rebarreling a 270 Win and not going with another 270 Win, I’d go 280 ai. A fast twist on a 270 Win is also interesting. Getting to be more high BC offerings in .277.

There isn't much if anything that you can do with a 280AI that you couldn't do with a standard 280, and you can get Norma brass for the 280.
A .625 bc 162 grain bullet at 2850-2900fps will drop any non dangerous game, and in a easy feeding, light(ish) recoiling package.

IMVHO it is the best of the 06 based rounds.

I shoot standard 280. I have been shooting 162 sst 2780 in a 21" barrel. The 175 eldx looks like right around 2700 and the 185 rdf around 2680. Peterson makes brass for both, my nosler brass is 12 or 13x right now.

Wow it's been years since I have been here. Priorities always changing.
I am in the middle of a 280AI hunting rifle build, today I blueprinted a LA 700 action I purchased years ago. It turns out to have been made in 1963 and is in like new condition. I was amazed at the old style trigger on it. Have a Krieger 1-8 bbl and mc millan stock and dies on hand too. Understand I'll have to bed the scope mount due to the rest bridge being a little different.
