284 Win Brass???

I have been debating this for a while.
I can't decide to just get the 284 Win brass (fyi midway has in stock finally), or go with the 6.5-284 Lapua and neck up. Midways price went up on the 284 to $.79 case while of course the Lapua is still over a buck at Eabco $1.0875 per. Are there any knowledgable gents out there that shoot a straight 284 and maybe have experience with both?
I know the Lapua is better brass however with the neck up process are you losing some of that Lapua longevity? Also I have been reading the Lapua is 5 thous larger at the case head. My barrel is chambered for the straight 284 would that pose an issue? The Lapua would have to be worked to get that tricky 5 out of the base to get a solid chambering. Once more, working out the Lapua brass=reduced life. Another heads up this is going in a gas gun so there isnt a way to "firm the bolt down to fire form the 5 thous out". Not that "that" is recomended but 50 shooters will know what I'm talking about.
Any and all thoughts would help. Thanks guys

Re: 284 Win Brass???

bolt gun, lapua, gas gun win. both are good, lapua a bit more consistent, but the win saves some bucks and its going in an autoloader. Thats what i would do

Re: 284 Win Brass???

You have seen that the brass from Lapua and Winchester is different sizes.

I can tell you my brother has a .248 Winchester. His chamber was cut for Lapua brass, but he used Winchester brass. The brass lasted about 3 firings, and the primer pockets were too loose to hold a primer after that. He now uses Lapua brass.

I know some guys have done the same without difficulties using the Winny brass in the Lapua chamber. The best thing is to make sure the chamber was cut for Winny brass.

My $0.02; your mileage may vary.

You've got a .284 gas gun? AR10 platform? The Lapua brass is only being necked up half a millimeter, I wouldn't suspect it would hurt longevity too much. I bit the bullet and bought the Lapua for my bolt gun. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/tt238/terrydg37/IMAG0026.jpg

McMillan A5 with custom RAD pattern, Rem 700 LA with custom PTG bolt, 25'' Rock Creek Barrel 1/9 twist, have a MK4 4.5-14x and Larue Base waiting to be mounted. Now if I could just get out of the middle east to finish her up and shoot her....

Re: 284 Win Brass???

Sorry for the delay I am out of town. I guess I will have to verify the chamber specs with brux.
Tex,
Yes I have a 284 gas gun. Well still building it. I have the barrel from brux with the gas block extended out 2" past rifle length, jp adj block, white oak match vented free float hand guard, magpul prs stock, with a chip mccormick (spelling?) ar trigger. I'm minus the recievers is all then I can finally finish it. probably go with the ma-10 receivers so they can be mated perfectly. good luck in the desert.

Jeff,
I have looked at the 284 case head and thought that the primer pocket would get loose at even lower pressures than the large primer 308 type case head.

Does he have a Quickload pressure estimate?

Re: 284 Win Brass???

I do not know what the L pressure would be. I know that he was running them fairly hard, as he was getting 2,800+ fps for a 30"' barrel. When he got the Lapua brass, he started new load development, .. working form memory here now, but I recall he was in the 55-56 grains of H4831SC zone after the shift to Lapua brass - pushing a Berger 180 vld.
