Just wondering if the straight 284 win would be perfect for an AR 10 platform?
Failed in the day but with all the new technology and bullets could this be IT?
Closest thing to a short mag in 10?
Oal is to long. It is really to long for a short action aics so it would be way short in a ar10 mag. Not saying it can't be done but you would lose all the advantages of the long heavy for caliber bullets
You can run 140s but do they offer any material advantage over the current 308s? Not really, especially with the better 308 options available these days.
The 284 shines from 162 to 180 grains - but seated long. Unfortunately they do not fit well in Short Action mags! Seating the bullets too deep killed the 284 the first time around.
I have an original Winchester 88 in 284 Winchester. The mag length is the same as a 308, there are very few bullets that will work seated above the ogive and still work from the mag.....139gr Hornady interlocks barely work.
Maybe as a hunting option more than target? Also while it costs more money, LaRue and a couple others offer mags with considerably more length available, something like 2.870. Would that be enough?
I could see a 6x284 working. My argument not to would be what do you really get over a 243 or a 6 Creedmoor other then a headache converting brass to 6x284.
