Like to hear from 284 guys, what can you tell me?

What brass you running, barrel info inc. length and performance? BBL Life?

Accuracy? Ease of loading? Powders? Feeding w/o mods?

Anything you want to share, love to hear it. Seems like it has potential for a 7mm non mag SA round.

Thanks.

Re: 284 Win. Who is using, pros/cons, feeding?

i had one, it shot great i used winchester brass, rl 17 and 162 amaxes. shot just over 3000fps with 26" 9 twist benchmark barrel and was fed from 700 la via 300wm aics mags so i could seat bullets super long 3.24 if i remember correctly.

Re: 284 Win. Who is using, pros/cons, feeding?

I am building on right now on a 700 Long action. With AI 300 WM mags. Going to run lapua 6.5-284 brass necks up to 7mm. I will run 162 AMAXS at 2950 or so FPS. Should be a good combo. Barrel is a 9 twist 3 groove also from Benchmark barrels in Arlington WA

In what way? Sure you can get a 162 up over 3k fps with enough barrel and a long action, but a 0.6 BC bullet going 2800fps from a 2.95" short action and 24" barrel still beats the holy living snot out of a 308 shooting 175 SMKs @ 2750.

Not saying all 284's should be built on SA, but I think it is a perfectly reasonable option sometimes.

if you only need 2800fps why bother with the 284 just shoot a 7mm-08 then. less powder, less recoil, cheaper brass, works in all mags easily

Re: 284 Win. Who is using, pros/cons, feeding?

Great post by all. Well on that SA comment, if 2800 were what I were looking at, I'd just use a 7/08 for less recoil and better bore life, and stick a 26" on it, and expect to hit 2750. Maybe not, but close. 200 fps to sacrifice of potential to give up using a SA vs. LA is something to consider.

True nothing wrong running 2800, but there again, in lieu of a say 250-300 fps gain, your getting maybe 100 over a 7/08, IMO.

Thanks guys, looks like a LA is where a 284 works best.

Now any reason the same does not apply to a 7WSM? A different animal I know, what are guys using the WSM in predominantly, SA or LA?

Thanks all.

Because you'd need a 26-28" barrel to reach 2800fps in a 7-08 with a pretty well compressed charge. A 284 can hit 2800 in a 22-24" barrel without having to resort to a 3' powder drop tube.

All this said, I personally am still considering using a LA for my 284 project; but only if I deicide to run it in a tube gun. Any other stock where I'd have to worry about bonking myself in the nose every time I cycle the action (or develop a nasty habit of moving my head off-scope) then I'm going to stick with SA and see if I can either make AW mags work or run with some of the new Alpha WSM 8 rounders.

why do you have to be a downer i am really hoping to get around 2750 w/162 rl17 out of 24" 7mm-08, is this not feasable safely?

Do you think the 284 in a short action will have much of an advantage over a 7-08 with a 23" or shorter barrel? I have my doubts.

I'm building my 7/300 WSM on a long action with a 28" tube. I'm doing this because I have a long action, mag bolt face available already and I don't have to do anything extraordinary to load them out to 3.15" or more with the 180gr pills.

I've seen a pretty even split of SA and LA builds for WSM's and there are pros to each idea. The 2 biggest deciders for me were

I have a LA ready to go
I'm tall enough (ie, long enough arms) that I can cycle the LA bolt without smacking the bolt shroud into my face with my current LOP.

Next in line was that I can use Cabela's KwikKlip bottom metal without issue in the LA (not available in the SA) and it costs $150 for the bottom metal and 3 magazines. Not that a set of Surgeon WSM metal isn't great stuff and most likely superior to the KK stuff, but I didn't have the cash to spend a few hundred extra on that alone when I put all the parts on order. The KK has worked very well for myself and others in the past, I'm going to continue to use it.

Re: 284 Win. Who is using, pros/cons, feeding?

Rather than speculate what a SA 7mm-08 and a SA 284 Win can and cannot do, lets look at some numbers, shall we.

Case Capacity:

7mm-08 54 Grains H20
284 Win 66 Grains H20

Loads:

Using the Hodgdon Data Center and taking the fastest 162 Grain Bullets for each:

7mm-08 Max Load:

162 GR. HDY A-MAX Hodgdon H4350 .284" 2.875" 45.0 2568 42,600 CUP 48.0C 2714 49,800 CUP

284 Win MAX Load:

162 GR. HDY BTSP Hodgdon Hybrid 100V .284" 2.970" 49.0 2666 40,900 CUP 54.0C 2864 48,900 CUP

What all of this tells me is that when loaded to SA COAL lengths and equal pressure, the 284 Win in a Short Action will exceed the 7mm-08 by about 150 FPS.

The 12 grains of extra case capacity is telling, regardless of whether the 284 is chambered on a short or long action.

Now whether that extra 150 FPS the 284 Win offers is worth the hassel in brass, finding mags that fit, barrel life and performance on targets up to 1000 YDS is a question only you can answer.

Pretty much the exact same conclusion I came to, though I wasn't necessarily using the same powder selections for my comparison.

From everything I've seen and from everyone I've pestered for load data from a 7-08 is pretty much maxed out @ 2700-2750 until you go above a 24" barrel and even then you're really having to cram the powder in. A 284 @ SA lengths gives you room to spare and should hit 2800 relatively easily with a 22"-23" barrel.

My goal was a 162 AMAX running 2800fps, so for me the 284 SA looks like a perfect fit, especially since I don't like 24+ barrels. I'm not looking for absolute speed, I'm looking for the best fit for my goals.

Digglr: Everyone I've talked to has made it sound like that's doable, you're just going to have to keep your fingers crossed that it's an accuracy node because the only room you'll have to move is down from there.

Re: 284 Win. Who is using, pros/cons, feeding?

Good info/post and I agree.

The 7/08 is likely to run 100-150 different in a SA short bbl gun from a 284 IMO. Is that worth it? Probably NOT going to make/break a deal for me for MY use, to others it depends.

In a longer bbl, I'd think a 284 w/more capacity will show a little great increase being able to utilize the powder.

Just getting feedback, as I know some are experimenting w/different powders in the '08 yet powder selection applies to the 284.

Thanks guys.

Re: 284 Win. Who is using, pros/cons, feeding?

I've gotten encouraging results from my tests feeding 284's from AIAW mags, so I'm going to forge ahead on the SA 284 route. Of course it probably won't come to anything until next year, I haven't even ordered the barrel yet and I still have 2 hunting 308's to finish by Nov.
