284 Win 66 Grains H20

Using the Hodgdon Data Center and taking the fastest 162 Grain Bullets for each:
7mm-08 Max Load:
162 GR. HDY A-MAX Hodgdon H4350 .284" 2.875" 45.0 2568 42,600 CUP 48.0C 2714 49,800 CUP

What all of this tells me is that when loaded to SA COAL lengths and equal pressure, the 284 Win in a Short Action will exceed the 7mm-08 by about 150 FPS.
The 12 grains of extra case capacity is telling, regardless of whether the 284 is chambered on a short or long action.
Now whether that extra 150 FPS the 284 Win offers is worth the hassel in brass, finding mags that fit, barrel life and performance on targets up to 1000 YDS is a question only you can answer.

Pretty much the exact same conclusion I came to, though I wasn't necessarily using the same powder selections for my comparison.
From everything I've seen and from everyone I've pestered for load data from a 7-08 is pretty much maxed out @ 2700-2750 until you go above a 24" barrel and even then you're really having to cram the powder in. A 284 @ SA lengths gives you room to spare and should hit 2800 relatively easily with a 22"-23" barrel.
My goal was a 162 AMAX running 2800fps, so for me the 284 SA looks like a perfect fit, especially since I don't like 24+ barrels. I'm not looking for absolute speed, I'm looking for the best fit for my goals.
Digglr: Everyone I've talked to has made it sound like that's doable, you're just going to have to keep your fingers crossed that it's an accuracy node because the only room you'll have to move is down from there.
