.284 Win

Re: .284 Win

thinking about building it in a short action single feed. What kind of speed with the 180 bergers ? Is there an advantage in the heavier bullets VS. 6.5 s on long distance.

I know some build a 6.5-284 but the 284 is suppose to have longer barrel life. If so how much?

Re: .284 Win

take a look in the reloading section under loads and you'll see tons of that information. This topic is a regular one in the forum, so using search will find a lot of the info too.

Re: .284 Win

go for it you will love it, my 26" barrel pushes the 180s at 2915fps with rl17, I would recommend going 28 or 30 if it is for fclass and make sure it is throated long for case capacity. as far as I can tell it is probably the most efficient cartridge around for shooting heavy high bc bullets.

Re: .284 Win

Dar , I am about to do the same and rebarrel for a 284.I have a multi purpose rifle -AICS stock Barnard action and different barrels from True flight in NZ .I spoke to Grant at True Flight barrels yesterday about length , powder and barrel life .I mentioned reloader17 which certainly has the speed above other powders but he mentioned they had poor accuracy and changed over to i THINK adi AR2213SC if I remember right -28inch barrel was recommend for my setup and he giggled when I mentioned 2-3000 rounds for barrel life and thought more like 1500 but that depends on how hard you send them to the x or the mantle

Re: .284 Win

I could see the barrel life lasting if you don't push them. I shot with a guy last weekend. He had around over 1500 rounds down his tube. I heard that is why F-Class shooters are moving more in this direction was the barrel life. Even still a barrel is cheap. Twist one off and twist the new one on.
I haven't heard any negatives about building one. I will lengthen the throat out for longer bullets.

Re: .284 Win

Cheap ! I dont know -For a new fitted barrel is about 700 clams -not cheap really given all the other expenses in life - 1 x morgauge 3 x cars 1 x wife 10 x top model girl friends and an addiction to burning poweder often

Re: .284 Win

Most of the things you mention cost more than a barrel. All things add up but this is one of the least expensive things. Wife is one of the biggest cost. LOL One of my wife things is she wants to live in New Zealand. She was hot to trot on that thought for some time. If I asked her today if she wants to move there. She would be pack in a minute but that is another story.

My gunsmith would chamber it for around 125 and the barrel would cost 315 (total investment 440) not bad.
