Hello,
What Vihtavuori powder do you use to reload for .284 winchester with 162, 168, 175 or 180 grains bullet.
That's is the only powder available where i am living.
Thanks

Re: 284 winchester and Vihtavuori

N560 is your huckleberry with the 284 and the heavies. I used from 53g to 55.5g in my rifle. 54.5g of N560 with the 175g SMK shot <1/2MOA at 2867fps average with SDs in the single digits (2.2) in my 30 inch Shilen barrel. 2850 fps seems to be the sweet spot with the 175-180g class bullets in the 284, so use enough powder in your rifle to get there and I think you will be happy.

Re: 284 winchester and Vihtavuori

I have a 260 and want to build a rifle in a caliber that will give me extra reach at longer distance.
Do you thing the 284 winch is the caliber of choice?
What distance can i hope to get?

Re: 284 winchester and Vihtavuori

I have a long AICS and wonder how the 7wsm would work in the mag, maybe too short? Maybe a 7RM?
I would have prefered a 284 or 280 for barrel life.

A 180g Berger when started at 2850fps goes transonic around 1600 yards per JBM at standard conditions.

Start the same bullet at 2950fps (possible with RL17) get to 1700 yards.

Take those ballistics with barrel life >3000 rounds for competition and the .284 is hard to beat.

Yeah, the 7mm mags will get you more velocity, but also at less barrel life. In my opinion, the 284 or 284 Shehane is hard to beat for an all around chambering in 7mm.

Re: 284 winchester and Vihtavuori

I use Fed 210 Primers and VV N560 ONLY in my .284 Win. I load them long C.O.L. being 80,0mm or 3.15" I can get Berger 180 VLDs to leeve the rifle safely 3000fps or 900m/s. Barrel is Border 5R chromymoly (black) and 700mm long. Besides the load I use produces 0.5-0.7 MOA groups when I do my part. Sierra 175 Match King works too pretty well.

Do not use Fed 215 preimers as they will LOWER your velocities and prodice erractic pressures. They aparently push the bullet out before the powder ignites properly.

-> Buy Vihtavuori N560 and be happy :)

Re: 284 winchester and Vihtavuori

I run VV N560 out of my 7mm-300WSM with the 180 Bergers getting good velocity and accuracy. I am using the Federal 215s - wondering if I might see any improvement with the 210s.

Re: 284 winchester and Vihtavuori

If you are a match rifle shooter I would use VV-160. The 560 and other double base powders are not as good a choice for 25 shot strings. If a hunter the double base powder will pick up some velocity with no down side. Depending on the brass you choose about 50 to 52 grains of 160 with a 175 shou.ld be the right ball park.
