I have been gathering parts for a 3 gun/go to AR for several months now..and I have come to the conclusion that this rifle might see 1-2 multigun matches a year.

My question?

Was going with a WOA 18" barrel rifle length gas...thinking of going 16" mid length gas now..furthest shot it will ever need to make accurately is 500 yards..

Anyone see any downsides to the 16" WOA match barrel for this build?

Re: 3 gun/go to gun

I have used either a 16 or 14.5 inch upper for several years as my 3 gun/ go to gun and have been very happy with the results. If you are running optics, then the loss of 2 inches won't really hurt your accuracy or velocity. I have been able to hit Larue targets out to 325 yards without to much trouble. I haven't taken it out further than that.

I think that you will be happy with a 16inch upper.

Re: 3 gun/go to gun

if you cannot make the hit at 500 yds, fire a shot at it and take the miss, saves your time for calculating score later instead of wasting a lot of time for 5-10 points so basically barrel length doesn't matter much for long distance, get something light and fast for the short stages.
hope this helps.

Re: 3 gun/go to gun

I don't think the accuracy will be the issue. The reason people use the 18" or longer with the rifle length gas tube is recoil impulse.

Re: 3 gun/go to gun

probably gonna go with a 16" noveske SS barrel...everyone else has a 23-40 week wait on the barrel, or the bolt..

i can get the noveske with the bolt as fast as i can punch the my card number

nobody has shit in stock right now lol

. Seriously, good advice. Very few multigun matches have rifle shots beyond 300yds. A 16" mil spec barrel will be just fine for the vast majority of multigun rifle shots.

Check Brownells and Bravo Company, they usually have AR barrels in stock.

What optic are you gonna run? Lots of good choices in the low power variable category. I'd spend more time deciding on an optic vs barrel for a multigun rifle.

for now im going with the burris Tac30 in a larue spr-e mount that i had on my previous mid range AR....the optics will likely change in the future.

just trying to reach a decision on the barrel..no one has a good barrel anywhere except noveske right now with a headspaced bolt in stock..

I would not give up after just 1 round however going to war on steel will kill your stage as you know. Its up to the shooter to find the balance. Some matches don't let you move on until you have cleared the targets at the bank your on. Texas Multigun did that last year on the long range stage.

Re: 3 gun/go to gun

I am thinking of getting into some 3 gun myself. I have just picked up a custom build with mainly BCM upper lower etc with a 20 inch barrel and the Geissele super 3 gun. I have a decent scope on it for 3 gun, but would running a heavy rifle with 20 inch be a problem for competing?
Rail is a 14 inch Troy and have the Vortex Razor 1-4 scope on it
