This my first 3-shot group with the Kimber Advanced Tactical 308 I bought a few months ago. I had been meaning to post my first time out. Optics are a NF NXS 5.5-22x50 mil-dot.

Federal 175grain BTHP @ <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="text-decoration: underline">455yards 1.32"</span></span>

I'm a rookie at this and I know everyone on here is shooting much better groups, but for me I never thought I would be able to shoot this group. Now If I could just learn to attach a picture.

Re: 3-shot group

Damn, I recently just trashed the Kimber 8400 Tactical. I'll admit it, I am impressed. I also like the Winchester 70 action and that is why I run a FN SPR as well.

Regards,
Greyson

WHAAATTT??? I can't fit 50 grains of RE-15 under a 168gr. Amax! But I'm using LC Match Brass.

Looks like a 30-06, not 308, if thats what you were thinking.

If your only game is paper punching.....

My shit's built for one shot kills, not five round "groups". The true test of that is five shots on five different days, all impacting as intended....or three, or ten, or fifty.

Guilty here too, though, of a three shot "group" once in a while....500 yards with a recently built "tactical rifle". 190 SMK's, 1.312", from bipods, rear bag, and sling.

The proof though, is the same rifle just this past Thursday, at 602 yards...couldn't have missed my POA by more than a half inch. Entry was where you see it, exit was through the off side shoulder. Double lung soup, dead deer, cold bore shot.

AAHH... Thank you! Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking.

Re: 3-shot group

If he's talking about the accuracy of the rifle, then 3 shot groups are fine. If he's testing his shooting ability, then I agree that 5, 10, 15 shot groups would be a better indicator. Provided that the rifle is consistent, the bullets are exactly the same, and the conditions don't change, then the rifle will shoot the same weather it's 3 shot groups or 10. Add human factor, and groups will vary depending on shooters ability no matter how perfect the other factors are.

Shooters ability is why I think the whole 5 shot posting rule started back sometime ago. I could be wrong, no ones perfect, but that's what I gathered when I first read about 5 shot groups. 3 shot groups are still used by many respected rifle builders as their standard for their rifles accuracy. Others in order to promote sales use 10 shot groups as their standard. They do it because they know the rifle can perform, but I'm sure that they get calls from new shooters that want to know why they can't shoot a 1/2 MOA 10 shot group.

Should be able to, Im using Rem brass, when I shake the case I can hear the powder in there no problem. Thast an ought 6 you know, not a 308.

Re: 3-shot group

Focus on shots on target varied distance once you get your load right vs. the paper punch group trap.

Dot drills can be far more valuable as well as varied distance using holdovers rapidly and postional practice (barricades, rollover prone, etc).

If you want a good group drill put a target at 100 to 500 plus (or as many 100 yd increments as you can) and then one shot on each target take a break and do it again and again. I have found that to be a great drill and eye opening

Yes... I thought he meant 308 because that's what the OP is shooting I believe. The caliber switch got me!

Re: 3-shot group

JGorski's load and photo is a 30-06. Hornady's 7th Edition reloading manual shows 50.0 of RL-15 as the max load for their 165-168 bullets in the 30-06. That same manual shows 44.3 of RL-15 as the max for their 165-168 grain bullets in the 308.
