Has anybody tried the bergers in the old 06? If picking to make custom rifle for 500 yards under this would just seem the best choice caliber. But on longer shots I think a good high bc bullet would be needed. So what kind of accuracy can be had with the bergers in 06?

I would recommend using 308 for a build if you want 30 cal for 600 yards and under.30-06 will let you use heavier bullets for long range. But its a lot easier finding actions and stock for short actions .Brass is also easier to find for 308.Do not sell short any of the 6mm-6.5 mm cartridges.Good luck with build. You can use 308 with 175-185 bullets and have great results out to 600-1000 yards.

Insanely impressive! I get clover 5 shot groups with all 3 all day long but I am a fanatic with load work-up to the 1/10 of a grain and weight sorted fire-formed brass.

I use 168's, 190's and 215's and all of them are really impressive. I shoot the 168 at 500 on calm days, 190's on windy days and the 215's to 1000.. The BC of the 215 VLD's is close to .700 (.696).. very impressive. I used a Serengeti reamer on my build so the 215's are the max you can use in that chamber without shoving 3/4's of it down the case but you really do not need to go heavier. That bullets does anything I want it to do on top of a bit slower powder like 4831, VN160, or Reloader 22. H4350 for the lighter weights.

I also have a 28 inch barrel so that helps with the velocity and gives me leggs a 22" doesn't have.

I shoot the berger classic hunter 168GR with IMR4895.Shoots .5moa all day out of a stock browning A-Bolt.I have shot game out to 395 yds with no problem.Have not tried the VLDS through it.Good luck with your decision.

If you do a custom 30-06, you will be very happy with what you can do with it and the VLD's..

Who ever said a 30-06 isn't sexy has not seen one of these...

I wanted a longer barrel but it would not fit in the box...

I just worked up a load with the 168gr. classic hunter in a pre-war model 70. I'm getting 1/2 MOA at 100, 200, and 300 yds out of it. I haven't had the chance to stretch it out any further but I'm impressed so far!

I'm thinking of just getting a bunch of 168 classic hunters. That is enough up to elk! In the /06 that bullet will kill out to as far as I'm going to shoot! Those will also be perfect in my .308. Now what's your pet powder for 168 bullets....?
