I have heard that 30-06 can do 90% of what a 300WM will do without the extra muzzle blast, recoil, and with a longer barrel life.

If I load my 30-06 to a 300WM level, like a 190gr at 2900fps, which I believe is the FGGM 300WM load and it has been done in 30-06 with RL22, would this not have to have the same recoil, if not more based on a higher pressure required to push the same bullet at the same speed from a smaller case? wouldn't this also lead to the throat erosion and such that I hear is a problem with the short barrel life of a 300WM?

I plan on using my 30-06 for local deer out to 400 yards or so and a 180gr NBT is a typical load amongst my friends and family. I say friends and family as im finally making the switch from 308 to 30-06 for logistical reasons as well as the increased power potential.

so for future long range hunting or long range precision target shooting, I would like to set one load up and shoot it 99% of the time, if not 100%. would it not be a good idea to go with a 190gr load at 2900? would this not warrant a 300WM?

maybe I am thinking about this wrong? please set me straight...

1st of all a load like that would probably ruin you brass, second a normal 30-06 load with a 190 is more than adequate out to 1000 yards. Pushing a 30-06 like a 300wm will scorch a barrel just about as bad as any 300wm load.
