Re: 30-06 Help

Without changing anything but the barrel the 30-06 is pretty much the longest round you can go with.

This means it still fits in the magazine, the bolt face doesn't need changes, and the locking lugs don't need work.

If you open the bolt face up and shoot single shot you can shoot 338LM from it if you REALLY try, but standard magnum cases are much more realistic. A 532 bolt face and 3.5" COAL for the 300WM is do-able to feed from the magazine. I don't like doing this though.

What are you doing with the rifle that you need to go larger than 30-06? If you load for it, you can push the 06 cases pretty damn hard, and AI versions buy a considerable bit.

Karlos,
Do you plan on reloading? If so there more choices out there. Theres a 30-06 necked up to a .338. You can do an '06AI. Both are doable with barrel swap.

Karlos,

By "largest" do you mean bore size, or longest in COL? If you mean bore size, then the 9.3x62 is doable without modifying the action. If you taking largest as in length, normally 375 H&H length (3.65") is as long as you normally can go.

Without getting in to great detail, all mauser actions were not created equal. There are small ring, large ring and large ring magnum as well as shorts, mediums and longs. It would be helpful to know what you have...

For example, Original Oberndorf Mauser Sporting actions were made in three sizes. Shorts for cartidges like the 250 savage, mediums for the 8x57, 30-06, 9.3x62, and longs for the 375 H&H, 404 Jeffrey, 416 Rigby and the like.

Re: 30-06 Help

If you want a bigger caliber with a minimum of work and expense, take a serious look at the .338-06 and the .35 Whelen. Both kill way out of proportion to the velocities that they develop. I call my .35 Whelen my 'bang-plop' rifle, because it kills stuff DRT (Dead Right There).

As stated above, a lot is going to depend on what flavor of Mauser action you're using.

Re: 30-06 Help

If you are looking to sling a larger bullet, I'd suggest the .35 Whelen. If you are looking for flatter trajectories, try the .280 (7mm Remington Express) or even the 6.5-'06. The chambering you already have is excellent for hunting, and even for a lot of target work; and significant and suitable ballistic improvements can be easily had by simply rebarreling to chamberings that are based on this same venerable and reliable parent case.
