30-338lap ?

Re: 30-338lap ?

just looking at the whole thing , found a trg 42 action at good price, thought a 30-338 might be fun,
not even thought of the imp version ?

Re: 30-338lap ?

If you don't run the IMP version there's really no fireforming required, just neck and shoot it like any other necked down wildcat.

With the IMP version you'd most likely want to create a false shoulder in the neck by not completely sizing the whole neck length, or neck 'em down and use the bullseye/cream of wheat method to form the brass before launching any lead.

It will sling a 240 SMK a LONG way, if you can get the 208 Amax bullets you should consider them as well since they have a dynamite BC and you should be able to get them north of 3200 fps.

BTW, I don't have one. I thought about it for a short while and didn't pursue it for cost reasons and I don't have anywhere to shoot 2000y. I have done a lot of loading for wildcats though, and this isn't really any different.

Re: 30-338lap ?

cheers bohem
i think the imp version will have to wait,
i just read an old article which said you can push the 130 barns to 4300fps!!
just so happens ive got some208amaxs
we see how i go with those

Re: 30-338lap ?

Ok guys ill come clean. Just built me a 30-338 imp setup for the 220 henson bullets with the aluminum tips. Kreiger barrel 1-9 twist ,Manners stock,Lawton single shot action. Waiting on the muzzle brake and willcrown and install. Will post results when i get to complete it.

But if anybody has any ideas about some loads let me know

Re: 30-338lap ?

With VV560 and a 210JLK, 80gn will get you to 60,800psi and a 93% case fill depending on the seating depth.

Call Bobby Lawton I know he's played around with that cartridge a little.

Re: 30-338lap ?

Here's the new guide, I usually start 2gr down from max load and come up by 2gr until I see signs of pressure, then continue with 1gr to see if any pressure loads are worth considering.

This is not recommend by the manufacturer or most who reload.

For reference, I took the 338lm 250 gr Scenar with vvN560 to 95gr and went with 92.5 at 3110 for a load. Max suggested by the guide is 82.5, so I am 10gr over with slight signs of pressure. Pay attention to temperature increases and loads left in direct sunlight if you choose a signs of pressure load.
