30/378

Re: 30/378

Well, as you pointed out in the video, the scope is a lot higher over the barrel than it needs to be.

Re: 30/378

Hi as the obvirce the scope is at least 3/8" to high. we just worked on that exact rifle and a matching 338/378 today they can shoot very well to 1000 yards and past. the next thing is to have someone adjust and tune the trigger, the factory breaks are not great the thread is 5/8 24tpi so a good break like a SSG Vaporiser of Lawton break will tame it to a nicer level. then have the action bedded with epoxy to the alloy bedding block.

Then see how it shoots he has the basics there for a great long range rifle there.

twist 1/10

fps 3229 av.

Re: 30/378

After the bedding I'd start with 240's SMK's (if you can get them) and work down to 190's to see what it likes.

You should be between 3000 and 3100 fps with 240's and 220's with H50 bmg.

If it's an LR rig you should lean to BC over FPS first.

If that is a factory Weatherby, there is so much freebore,he'll never get close to the rifling. Bergers don't like a jump.

Re: 30/378

Good luck lapping the (6) lugs!!! I hope it shoots good without doing that. The 240 SMK or the 240 VLD when they come out will be your best bet.

For years we have relayed that it is best to jam the VLD into the lands for best performance. This works for many rifles however there are many rifles that do not shoot the VLD well when the bullet is jammed. We have learned that the VLD can shoot best as much as .150 jump off the rifling. VLD bullets can be sensitive to seating depth and it has been found that these bullets shoot best in a COAL “sweet spot”. This sweet spot is a COAL range that is usually .030 to .040 wide.

We have already tried smk 240 down to 200 never tried the vld
so far best groups are from load stated above.

yes this is a factory barrel but there is so little free bore
I have no prob putting the head on the lands and still having plenty of room in the mag
