So I have a Winchester action (L/A w/mag bolt face) sitting around that I need to do something with. At the moment I'm thinking about turning this into a heavy hitting hunting rig. So after looking around I'm thinking about using this action to build a 300 Norma Mag. I'm thinking that round pushing a 210 grain Berger bullet would make a hell of hammer. But I really don't know much about the round and am looking for information and insight. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Re: 300 Norma Mag

260 shooter thank you for the intel. What kind of brass life are you seeing? I'm thinking cutting the barrel length down a bit, something more in the 24-26 inch range. I already have a long barreled 338 for my ELR rig thus I'm just looking for something lighter and more compact that will deliver a lot of energy on big game at distance.

Also what type of magazine system are you using? I was hoping this round would feed out of 300 Win Mag AICS mags. But I certainly can live with an internal blind style magazine system.

Re: 300 Norma Mag

The 308 Norma Mag is an old case design that is in the belted magnum family of cartridges. However the 300 Norma is a newer case design is basically a necked down 338 Norma case. Thus it is a beltless design.

Re: 300 Norma Mag

.338 Lapua has a .590 boltface, standard magnum boltface is .532".
Might have some issues opening up boltface or maybe not. Better to use an action like Sako 995 (TRG-s or TRG-42) that was designed for the super-magnum boltface. .378wby mag ctg family is also same approx boltface.

.30-338 is not a supervelocity "hammer", but it is highly esteemed for 1000yd accuracy. The WSM cartridges offer performance on-par with the .300win mag, but w/o belt and give more bullet seating flexibility if shooting the 210gr VLD and BTHP match bullets.

Nothing wrong with belted magnum ctgs, as long as you set them up to headspace on the shoulder and not the belt.

Re: 300 Norma Mag

Alright so what I am hearing is that the 338/300 Norma mag bolt uses a .590 bolt face. That being the case I might have to take another direction. And 300 WSM is not a bad option and a cheaper one.

I don't mind running a belted magnum, lord knows I have sent a lot of rounds downrange with a 7mm RM and 300 Wby. Thus I know how to get them to preform well. But I'd rather not deal with that belt if I don't have to.

Re: 300 Norma Mag

Great cartridge but hard on barrels. It will become more popular when redding starts making dies for it. I`m interested in the new 300 blaser. Norma right now makes live rounds but I don`t shoot factory shells in my custom rifles. If I can`t reload for it, I don`t want it. Anyway, the 300 blaser gives same velocity with less powder as the 300 norma. If you can, read Bryan Litz info on 30 cal bullets. The perfect bullet for 30cal is the new berger 230gr. BC is .711. The 210gr is good but is beat by the new 7mm. The 240gr Sierra has to long of a bearing surface which is not good, copper fouling, pressure, etc.

Re: 300 Norma Mag

I'm not really worried about barrel life. I have had and will continue to have many barrel burners. I've looked at this round from a reloading aspect and the brass is available but expensive. The dies are available from Forsters thus quality dies are available. As for bullet selection yes better bullets exist for target use but this is intended to be a hunting rifle. Thus the 210 Bergers. Now the 300 Blaser I haven't looked at so it is another option. But I know less about that round then I do about the Norma.

That's good news. These are the bullets I intend on using if my 300NM imp if it ever gets done.

Re: 300 Norma Mag

I only have 2-3 loads through my brass so far, and everything is fine.

I spoke with Jimmy Sloan and he said that both the 338 and 300 Norma mags did not need a barrel longer than 26".

The 208 A-MAX, H-1000, Fed 215M is very consistent. The best numbers I've had (with only 4 shots) were 3100 to 3108 fps, but 3 of the 4 were 3100.

I'm now waiting for the farmers to get crops out so I can stretch the range out. Hope to get out to 1500 this winter.

I'm running Badger M-5 CIP bottom metal. I don't think i'll use up all the room I have, but I didn't want to have to worry about it.

Re: 300 Norma Mag

A couple of our shooters absolutely love the .338 Norma Magnum. They are getting stellar performance using a barrel shorter than you would normally use on the .338 Edge. I saw a bunch of the brass today and it's just begging to be wildcatted into .30 caliber (or less!). That has "flat shooting laser beam" written all over it!

Yep the 338 Norma is a great round. And I really like the performance I've been seeing out of my buddies. As for wildcatting thing. There is no need. Norma has already developed the 300 Norma mag. It is simply a matter of purchasing the brass, dies, and reamers.
