i have been looking at getting a new rifle. but cant decide between the 300 wsm and the 7mm wsm. any opinions? would be used on elk and mule deer.

Either one would kill anything in North America. Both have a great selection of hunting bullets. The 300 WSM has a great selection of factory ammo. You would have to relaod to get the most out of the 7 WSM. The 7 with heavy VLD bullets will perform a bit better in wind than the 300.

I own both and for factory ammo 300wsm is much easier due to the variety. However if you hand load its closer to shooters choice. Having said that I enjoy my 7wsm for both comps and hunting. Although it just got but to the back of the line in hunting since it went out in 2010.

Personally, Id go with the 300wsm. I shoot a 300winmag and love it. But I plan on building a 30.06 and 308 in the future. I like the idea of being able to buy 308 bullets in BULK quantities to use in all my guns. I have a great feel for them, and it just makes it easier for me to keep things straight. Either caliber can tack drive, and drop anything in NA

If you run equal weight bullets out of both in a ballistic calculator. Wind drift and drop is better out of the 7mm bullets and down range energy is better with the 7mm past 600 as well. My next build is going to be a 7SAUM. You can run the 7WSM a little hotter than the 7SAUM but with deminishing returns.

To be perectly honest unless you are sure you want a short action I would just go 300Win or 7Rem. Bother are in the identical accuracy class and both are better with the super long bullets that make the 7mm and 30 cal great.
Either one is fine on game though the bigger the game the finer the 30 cal looks.
The 200Accubond is an excellent LR hunting bullet.

300WSM due to better availability of factory rounds and reloading parts as well, both are very potent though.

This is a tough call. I really like most of the 7's due to the wide selection of high bc bullets. That being said there have been a lot of good options for the 30's over the last few years.
I used to run a long action 7wsm with a 26" tube, my load was 180 bergers at 2950, it was a very accurate rifle. The last few years I have been running a 300wsm on a short action with a 22" tube. I run 208's at 2800.
Lets compare those two loads through jbm in mils and in a 10mph wind for my area of hunting

think i might have to go with the 300 wsm. have been walking around the stores around here and no one carries 7wsm ammo. which is one reason that im getting away from the 7mm08. i love the round just cant find ammo

I've had both from GAP and they are awesome calibers. I shot 180 Accubonds out of my 300 WSM and shot deer out to 500 yards. I just got my 2nd GAP 7 WSM (non typical) and am shooting the 180 VLDs through it. I've also killed deer out to 500 yards with it also. They are both great calibers and I like the 7 WSM for longer range hunting and shooting due to the BC on the 180 VLDs. You can't go wrong with either one.
