Some time back, I posted I was having trouble feeding my 300 RUMs out of my CDI bottom metal and a 300WM AI mag in my Remington 700. I was pleased that some of the top smiths answered and recommended I get a 338 AI mag. Thanks for taking the time to do that. I have another question I hope you will help me with.

The 338 AI mag feeds the 300 RUMs nice and smoothly however, I note that when I try to put more than one round of 300 RUM in the AI 338 mag the diameter of the 300 RUM case is larger than the magazine detents in the sides allow. Is there some modification I need to make or something I am missing?

Thanks for your help.

Re: 300 RUM in a 338 AI mag?

Yes. You have to have the mags machined to allow for the longer case length of the RUM. Several folks here can do it. Stacey at AICS did mine. I think it was in the neighborhood of $25.

Re: 300 RUM in a 338 AI mag?

Sir, are we talking about the same thing? Im not having a problem with the overall length, it appears the FRONT diameter of the 300 RUM case is not fitting inside the 338 AI magazine for the FRONT magazine detents in the sides of the magazine. Are you saying the detents have to be machined out? Thanks for your reply.

Re: 300 RUM in a 338 AI mag?

The shoulders that need to be machined out help stop the shoulder on the 338 from going forward in the mag. I milled out the shoulder on the mag and now from recoil the shells hit the front of the mag and mess the tips of the bullets up. Whats your guys experience with this?

Theres no necesity to mill it out! The stiffening ribs can be pressed out slightly with three blocks of steel and a shop press... 5 mins work actually. I can provide pics if people dont understand how...

That I would like to see, I haven't been able to visualize that. Post some pics here or in a new thread.
