I just overhauled a Remington Sendero .300 RUM with a McMillian A-5 stock and Surgeon DBM. It came with a .300 Win. magazine. When I attempt to feed from the magazine it sticks and dents the shoulder of the case. Do I need a different magazine?

Re: .300 RUM won't feed out of AI .300 Win mag?

Tried to mod it but, I can only get one in the mag as the shoulder hits the follower groove. Called CDI, he said he had no AI mags at all and no ETA. He said I would need the .338 LM magazine though.

Re: .300 RUM won't feed out of AI .300 Win mag?

You need 338LM mags but since the RUM is fatter cartridge you will still have to open the mag feed ramps up slightly, and then it will feed fine.

Re: .300 RUM won't feed out of AI .300 Win mag?

None of the RUM cartridges will work out of the AI mags without modification. It's the follower grooves that are stamped into the body of the mag.The rim to shoulder length on the RUM's is longer than on the Lapua. If you're using the older non-CIP 2468 AI Lapua mag, it's the same overall length as the 0479 300 Win mag. The follower groove location may be different on the new CIP length 4808 mag. I don't have one to check. The solution to getting the older, original mags to work with the RUM's was to machine the follower grooves out of the mags. Which mag is your bottom metal using? The non CIP 2468 mags measure about 3.73" front to back on the outside of the mag body.

Measure the .300 Win mag that came with your Surgeon bottom metal. It should be the same dimension as what I stated for the .338 Lapua mag. They both fit in the same chassis and AI rifles. If this is the bottom metal you have, http://www.surgeonrifles.com/surgeon-lon...wBvAHIAaQBlAHMA a CIP length mag will not fit in there, it's too large front to back. I would contact Surgeon, let them know what you're trying to do and see if they know of a mag that will work with the RUM and fit in that bottom metal.

Re: .300 RUM won't feed out of AI .300 Win mag?

So will the 338rum work with 300wm mags? I have a surgeon 300wm dbm, but I have decided that 338rum is a better decision for extreme long range. Or will the 338lm mags work in the 300wm long action dbm?

Any help would be appriciated.

Re: .300 RUM won't feed out of AI .300 Win mag?

If using any of the RUM cartridges out of an AI magazine. the forward reinforcing rib on the magazine will need to be milled out. I shoot my 338RUM out of an AICS and since I don't shoot it for anything but slow fire precision long range, the magazine is just a single shot follower/platform. I load the 300 grain Bergers at 3.800", so I cant get them in the magazine anyhow.

When I shoot 250 grainers (3.600") they feed fine out of the modified (338LM)magazine. The 300RUM's shoulder is even farther forward than the 338RUM. Some shooters report that they can get the 338RUM to feed from the 338LM AI magazine w/o mods. The linked thread above was a big help to me when addressing this problem.

Re: .300 RUM won't feed out of AI .300 Win mag?

Thanks for the help but will the rum work with ai 300wm mags? I am willing to modify the mags, I know I will have to cut back the lips on the mag so the rum will feed up towards the chamber.

Re: .300 RUM won't feed out of AI .300 Win mag?

You would be better off using the 338LM magazine for the 300RUM. It will fit in the long action. Just don't get CIP length unless you have a longer action. A long action is a long action, just different bolt faces. My donor action for my 338RUM build started life as a 7mm Mag. Didn't have to open up the bolt face or change anything. Of course when it was rebarreled, my smith set the headspacing. The 300RUM case is as long or longer than the 338RUM. The neck is shorter but the shoulder is further forward.

Re: .300 RUM won't feed out of AI .300 Win mag?

And yes, the 338LM magazines should work in the 300WM bottom metal as long as the DBM accepts AI magazines. They slide in and work fine on mine and like I said, it started as a 7mm Mag. If you want to PM me, I can take some measurements of my mag for you.

Re: .300 RUM won't feed out of AI .300 Win mag?

Yeah, the 300rum won't work with the 300wm, I modded mine, and i get get them in the mag no problem, But the spring doesn't work to keep pushing them up. I might mess with it a little bit more but it would just be a waste cuz my reloads are too long to fit in the mag anyway.

Thing that annoyed me is when i ordered my AI AX i specifically said .338 LM magazine, and they gave me the 300wm
