You're the first to ask, that I've read in 3+ years, but why not? Just get some reloading data for that cartridge with 275grs or 300s, if you can find it and start 10% below max charges. Am I correct in thinking that Weatherby rifles offer very long throats? This might be a good thing if you have the length in your mag, to seat the 300s out farther.

You be the guinnea pig and report back.

Start low and work up.

Re: 300 SMK in 340 Weatherby

With the fps the 340 WBY would shoot the 300's at, the Berger 300 would be my first choice but either is a great bullet.

I would play around with a balistics calculator before I spend any money buying bullets. I'm not sure the 340 has enough horsepower to push a 300 grainer fast enough to make it out perform a 225 in the same gun.

Re: 300 SMK in 340 Weatherby

The freebore in a factory WBY is ridiculously long.

I would bet a loaded 340 round with a 300gr bullet that was loaded out to touch the lands in a factory WBY rifle would be so long you would have to pull the bolt to extract a loaded round. That's just a guess but I would bet I'm not far off.

Re: 300 SMK in 340 Weatherby

I completely forgot about twist.

What is the twist of your rifle? 1:10" or better, go for it. If it's 1:12" or 1:11" you might stick with the 250 SMKs and Scenars.

Thanks for the replys, the twist is 1-10, the chamber is custom with less freebore and I just put a Wyatt extended mag box so I can load out to 3.8" and it is a push feed M70.Just thought if someone had already tried it I wouldn't re-invent the wheel. I will try some starting loads for the 270 gr bullets and back off about 5% and see what happens. Will let you know.
