A family member asked me to build a rifle for him. He is a 2LT with uncle sam's misguided children and on active duty. He selected a 300WM. I recommended a .308 but he wants more range and energy.
His specs on the build, so far, are: Remington 700 LA, a cut rifled barrel ( I have a Rock barrel, rem varmint contour, 1:10 twist ), McMillan A-5 stock with adjustable cheek OD and black, Surgeon DBM. I plan to put a 30moa scope base on it. While I am using it I will use a USO scope, but the Marine will have to save his pennies so he can get a scope for himself.
This is the stock (on the bottom), it is cut for BDL floor plate.

So far I have sent the stock to Mr. Gardner at GAP to be inlet for the Surgeon DBM. And I chucked up the barrel and indicated it in the lathe til the .0001 indicator only has the slightest wiggle at two points. I am using my Grizzly 4003g lathe with a cat head on the front and back.
After indicating the bore true to the spindle bore of the lathe I cut the tenon threads then drilled out a bit for the chamber and cut the bolt nose recess.

The chamber reamer i ordered from PTG ought to be here next week. I will cut the chamber and time the receiver to TDC of the barrel. Then I will cut the barrel to 24 inches and thread for the muzzle brake, install the brake and time it. Then contour the brake to the muzzle and polish the barrel. Then it will be ready to put in the stock and fit the DBM from surgeon. I will bed the receiver and then test fire it.
I am going to post up video to the you tube account as I go, but I have to convert the file first, and I will post a link here later.
More later.

Re: 300 Win mag build

Hey 10th,
I am in Bagram as of now. If you know of any guys that have it pretty rough out there and need basic necessities or anything special, let me know.

Re: 300 Win mag build

I headspace magnums with .215" of belt space, not the .220" minimum per SAAMI.

That is because there is almost no magnum brass anywhere that is bigger than .215".

Some people do not agree with me, which reminds me of a joke... er true story 30 years ago...

A New York cab had a flat tire. The passenger suggested that the cabbie put the spare tire on. The cabbie protested with a thick Pakistani accent, "I cannot. My training for this job was that I cannot drive anywhere without an inflated spare tire in the trunk. And if I change the tire I will not have an inflated spare in the trunk."

Re: 300 Win mag build

Well I finished bedding the action and took it for a test drive. It feeds, fires, extracts and ejects just fine.
When the base gets here I will bed it and mount a scope and shoot it for groups. Then it is off for coating (OD cerakote).
Here is some pool porn.

Re: 300 Win mag build

I just won a 300 win mag weatherby vangaurd and i am wanting to upgrade it stock barrel ect. Pretty much only keeping the action! I know that it is not the quallity of your build by far but would like to know if anyone had any advice on barrel choices for this action and advice for the build in genral. Your custom job is a true piece of art thank you for taking care of the guys fighting for us and thank you to the guys fighting for us so that we can all enjoy our freedoms.

Re: 300 Win mag build

The only change in the specs I posted in the original post is the scope base. I am ordering a 20MOA instead of the 30 because the planned scope won't have enough travel.

Jrob: barrel is a Rock cut rifled barrel 1:10 5R in Remington Varmint contour finished as long as possible. It is at least 26"

clturner8 I know nothing about Weatherby vanguard except they seem to be on par with most entry level production rifles. You certainly can put a scope on it and have a fine 1moa rifle. As far as modification goes I chose Remington 700 for (almost)all the home builds I have done. There is more good information about how to do things and an abundance of parts for a reasonable price and they are capable of superior accuracy. Plus, since my nephew is a Marine, he will be using a very similar rifle when he does the scout sniper part of his training for his MOS.

As for the videos. I have about an hour of video. I have to make some shorter segments. I got pretty lazy and did not film the bedding of the stock. There is so much good intel on that already, I did mine just like Wm Roscoe posted in his tutorial. After I finished letting it cure I got it all cleaned up and painted the interior of the stock a flat black. That is the only difference.

Re: 300 Win mag build

Well the rifle is back from Cerakote. It looks stellar.

First a pic from the bedding.

After bedding I got it cleaned up and sent for coating. After a month I got it back and put it together. I put my USO on it for now. The Lieutenant will have to get a scope for this beast after I hand it over. Now the finished rifle.

Thanks for looking. Ya'll remember that Marines are fighting and dying in Afghanistan. Those fellas, the doggies, and the zoomies are doing a hard job. I got a buddy going back to Iraq for another tour this summer. Army aviation. It is a tough thing leaving your teenage boys for a year, maybe forever.
