Fellers,
I am having a rifle finished in 300 win mag and I have never had one before. It's being built on a trued 700La- McMillan stock/bedded- It's gonna have a heavy Shilen 1-10" twist barrel. Finished at 24" and I'll be running a can on it most of the time. I like the idea of shooting heavy rounds out of it. Like 190 to 220 grain.. But I'm open to whatever loads guys are shooting.. I pretty much wanna shoot long range with it.. Targets.. It looks like from what I can see alot of guys are shooting H1000. I'm sure this post is on here somewhere but I got tired of looking for it - haha Any help would be appreciated. I just want to have time to find the powder and bull sh$% and get it here before I get the rifle back..
Thanks all,
SFU

winchester brass

71.5g of H4831SC
Berger 210 VLD

Betweem Retumbo, H1000 and Rl22- which is the least temp sensative? Or have you guys all had good luck with all these powders? I understand using certain powder with bullet weight but I would like as much consistancy as possible.. I know there is alot of powder in these rounds ( compaired to a 308) thanks

I think H1000 is the least temp sensitive of the two. I don't know a lot about RL22 but I know H1000 does very well with temp changes.

I run a 300 WM with an 11 twist Obermeyer 5R, M24/Rem Target Contour, 24", Surgeon 1086R action and here is what I use

210 VLD Hunting
70.5 H4831sc, jammed about 0.005", Fed 215m, Norma brass. Groups in the 0.1's at 100m and puts 5 rounds inside 2.5" at 600 yards. I have found this bullet to vary considerably from lot to lot and with the new 200 gr Hybrid have since moved on. But with the right lot they really shoot. RL-25 also worked quite well (73.5 grains and jammed).

200 Hybrid
71.0 H4831sc, jump 0.005", Fed 215m, Norma brass. Groups in the Low 0.1's at 100m and groups about 0.4 MOA at 600 yards with minimal load development. This is my new target bullet.

190 VLD Hunting
73.0 RL22, jammed 0.005", Fed 215m, Norma brass. Groups about 0.5 MOA at any range, sometimes better. This is my hunting load. Note RL22 is not temp stable, and for me at least it's a love-hate relationship. On a good day the powder is unbeatable, and on a bad day I have trouble keeping it within 0.5 MOA. RL-25 also worked well (76.5 grains jammed).

I would recommend H4831sc, H1000 and if those aren't satisfactory use RL-25 and RL-22.

I use a 24" Rock Creek barrel M24 contour 10 twist, Surgeon 1086R action
208g Amax RL-22 72.0 CCI 250 with a COL of 3.583 clover leaf group at 100y

208 AMAX and H1000. Im not very good yet at long range and am still building my skills but I can keep 3.5" groups at 500 yards pretty damn regularly. As for load, Find your pressure spike and work from there. With the chamber and amount of lead/freebore Im running, i am loading ALOT more powder than everyone else seems to be able to run without hurting the brass or rifle. Therefore I wont tell how many grains Im running. But, I think you will be happy with that bullet and powder.

26" M-86, 1:12 twist, 190SMK, 74gr 7828SSC, 215M primer, touching lands, 2900'/s. Cloverleaf at 100yds, lots of varmints over 1000. Next bbl will be 1:10. Seems to be taking a back seat to the 338LM.
