Does any one know where I can find load data for the 208 amax? Hornady didn't have anything listed on their site? The rifle is a Rem 700 with Pac-Nor 28" 1 in 10 twist barrel and I plan on using RE-22. According to other bullets in the same weight range I think 67 grains would be a safe place to start, but thought I would check here first. Also do these respond to being jamed into the lands (or close to the lands)like Bergers or should they be seated closer to factory specs? Thank You, Colby

From Hornady's data:

Re-22, 208gr A-MAX(sd .313 bc .650), Rem 700, WLRM primers, 25" 1/10" barrel, Frontier brass. COL 3.340"

powder charge fps
59.2gr 2400fps
62.2gr 2500fps
65.1gr 2600fps
68gr 2700fps
70.9gr 2800fps
72.4gr 2850fps

67.6gr of RE22 is my accuracy load for the AMAX 208

Barrel is 26" cut rifled 1 in 10 twist.

Wow, you are at the low end of the powder curve. What is your speed with that charge?

Re: 300 Win Mag loads with 208 A-Max?

Dunno. I haven't chronied it yet. I just keep testing for whatever gives me the tightest group. Also recently, I switched to Ramshot Magnum due to much better availability so haven't felt motivated to chrony the RE22 load.

Re: 300 Win Mag loads with 208 A-Max?

My 300 win shoots RE-22 very well up to 200 gr bullets, 200gr bullets and above I use H-1000. The A MAX is the most accurate bullet I have ever shot in my 300 win. My load is 75.2 gr of H-1000 with Fed 215M primer, I am .015 from the lands. I neck size with a Lee collet die and bump the shoulder back with a Redding body die. It took me awhile to get the neck tension just where I wanted with the AMAX but it shoots less than 1/2 MOA all day long, some groups lately have been scary accurate. I find that the AMAX is pretty good in the wind also. I am getting right around 2775 fps with this load. I know some people like to go alot faster but this shoots in the same spot shot after shot.

Re: 300 Win Mag loads with 208 A-Max?

Thanks for the replys everyone. Have any of ya'll tried reloader 25? I have never used this powder but I think with these heavier bullets and a 28" tube it may produce better velocity.

Re: 300 Win Mag loads with 208 A-Max?

Haven't tried RE25 but the Ramshot Magnum has a similar burn rate. Accuracy load with Magnum is 69.6 gr with bullet seated 0.01 off the lands. However, I've also tested with a 3.34 OAL and gotten similar 0.4 MOA groups.

Re: 300 Win Mag loads with 208 A-Max?

Yes I have I was up to about 74-75 grains of RL25 to get the same speed as the 71.6 grains of RL22 which is about 2950 fps. The ES was also a bit wider. Can't remember what it was.

Re: 300 Win Mag loads with 208 A-Max?

My last range trip out with the 300WM I tried some Retumbo with the 208. I only loaded a few rounds, and I was getting much higher speeds than R22 and H1000. I will be experimenting more with this when I have time.

Re: 300 Win Mag loads with 208 A-Max?

Thanks for everyones replies. My rifle seems to like 67.5 grains of RE22 at least that has been my best grouping so far which is 3/4" 5 shots at 100yds. I have loaded up to 70.2 grains but the groups spread out after that. I have loaded at 3.340 and 3.550 oal and the 3.550 shot much better. I'm still going to play with the oal length and see what I can come up with. I also think it is time to order some new brass, what are your opinions on the best available brass?

Thank You, Colby

Re: 300 Win Mag loads with 208 A-Max?

Anyone running a light crimp on the 208s with better results?

Also, what are your opinions on Hornady verses Federal brass?

Thanks Again,
Colby

Re: 300 Win Mag loads with 208 A-Max?

No crimp. Just .003" neck tension. Hornady brass is a little better than Federal although either will work.

Re: 300 Win Mag loads with 208 A-Max?

Finally got some 208's to run in my rifle. Loaded .010" off the lands per Rob01's advice. 70.7 gr. of RL22 in Nosler brass, CCI 250 primers, .002 neck tension. 2850 fps @3000 ft. elev. out of 22" barrel. 1st group just under 5/8" @ 200 yds. YMMV.

Now I need to get out to some distance to verify it, but looks promising. I like it when things start falling into place

jrob300,

Let me know how that load works once you get to stretch it out pass 200 yards not that 5/8 at 200yds is not good enough. I just had my 300 win mag 700P barrel cut down to 22".

Wow, that was an old post of mine...

I'm not loading RL22 at all anymore, I've moved on to H1000.

Two things to be very careful about getting loads from others is to understand how different brass internal volumes are from mfg. to mfg. and how close to the lands/far out of the case they are loading which also affects internal volume and pressure.

Having said that...

I'm currently loading 76.2gr of H1000 in Nosler/Federal brass and this load has been MOA or better out to 1900 yds. I'm using CCI 250 primers and loading to .010 off the lands or about 3.650". This gives me 2870 from a 22" barrel. Very forgiving load. I have over 20 firings in some brass and am just now getting thinning at the case head.

My Winchester load is an absolute hammer, but might be a little hot. I'm getting loose primers after 2-3 firings, but I might be too close to the lands, so more work needs to be done. It's 78 gr. H1000 loaded to .010 off the lands. CCI 250. This gives me 2925+ from the same barrel and has shot very impressively to 2300 yds.

Start low and work your way up.

Yeah John it looks like old Bob L. Swagger felt like tagging all the old 208 load data threads LOL
