300 Win Mag questions on reloading

I do some reloading for pistol and rifle but so far I have not reloaded a belted magnum cartridge. I purchased a new rifle in 300 Win Mag for elk and bear hunting and possibly some long range target (steel) shooting and I would like to reload my own ammo. I have heard and read that there are head space problems with the belted magnums as the round gets its headspace from the belt. Traditional full length resizine will lead to head separation in short order. One die manufacture said to just neck size and then bump the shoulder ~ .002". another die company said no big deal. I am open to comments that will help me decide whether to invest in reloading dies and brass etc. for this caliber and still get a good number of reloads per piece of brass. Any information is welcome. Thanks for sharing.

Re: 300 Win Mag questions on reloading

I neck size my personal 300WM until it needs the shoulder bumped back to chamber smoothly. You can cause excessive headspace if you size it back too much. You will increase the amount of reloads you get if you neck size only. I prefer the Nosler brass for my 300WM. I stopped counting after 5 reloads how many times I've reloaded them, but it's in the 7 to 9 range. Neck sizing is very simple, but you need to read up on the proper techniques and cautions when doing so.

Well, reloaders should ignore the belt. It's a bottle neck case; size so the shoulder fits your own chamber and that'a all you need to do.
