300 Win Mag...Trim brass after every load?

Re: 300 Win Mag...Trim brass after every load?

Measure YOUR CHAMBER and trim accordingly. Or trim to what the book says. Personally I measure the max case length for THAT specific chamber and trim to that length -.010"

How do I measure my chamber?

Re: 300 Win Mag...Trim brass after every load?

I make my own guages with a fired piece of brass, a Dremel tool and a long bullet. But Stoney Point / Hornady makes a very good version to do just that for a fair price. Measure the max case length 3 times and average it. I usually trim it .010" shorter than the max. This saves hot gas wear on the throat area. Excess trimming and short brass will cause the throat to erode prematurely.

Only when brass exceeds max lenth.

If you measure your chamber, some are cut .010 to .020 over SAAMI max length listed in the manuals and you can allow your brass to grow to this length.

Sinclair has a little insert that goes in the case and then in the chamber for you to measure your specific chamber.

Re: 300 Win Mag...Trim brass after every load?

I just measured my chamber by cutting down a case and using the sinclair 308 plug.
I got 2.6575". That's a long way from the 2.610 trim to length for 300 win mag.
What should I trim my brass to? 2.620"' the book max case oal? And what about the brass that is shorter?
